Managing polypharmacy in older adults is a complex but crucial task. In her session at #NMS24, Professor Jennifer Martin, physician, clinical pharmacologist, and President of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians discussed the significant risks associated with polypharmacy, particularly in an ageing population. Professor Martin’s session explored the adverse effects that multimorbidity and multiple medications can have on older patients, leading to serious issues such as hospitalisations and long-term health complications. She provided real-world tools and strategies for GPs and other prescribers to avoid harmful medication interactions, and improve health outcomes for older patients. "The introduction of physician assistants would be a major change, and it is important to ensure that patient safety and current optimal patient flow, including communications and referral patterns in the health system, wouldn’t be compromised” says RACP President Professor Jennifer Martin. The RACP is calling on the Queensland Government to undertake thorough consultation with medical experts before introducing physician assistants. We are concerned that the introduction of physician assistants may significantly impact how training for medical students and junior doctors is conducted and spreads the workforce that trains doctors even thinner. “The predatory and profit-minded behaviours of some retailers and sporting bodies can encourage people to drink to harmful excess” says Professor Adrian Dunlop, President of the RACP's Chapter of Addiction Medicine. “As a result, women’s shelters and other services for victim-survivors have been telling us, year in and year out, that they are overwhelmed around holidays and sporting events." The College had long been calling for an end to dirt-cheap alcohol, alcohol sponsorships in sport and other forms of irresponsible advertising.
