We call on the Northern Territory Government to stop the clock on the legislation to abolish minimum unit pricing. Removal of #MUP will increase social, financial and other costs for bystanders of drinkers. The economic cost of harm from others’ drinking was $20 billion in Australia in 2016, including absences from work. Minimum Unit Pricing must remain in place to reduce social, health and economic costs for all. Read some of the robust evidence from The Lancet supporting it: https://lnkd.in/eaFkpMgA READ OUR MUP FACTSHEET: https://lnkd.in/gm45kex #MinimumUnitPricing #MUPsaveslives #alcoholharm

The Queensland Team at the The Royal Australasian College of Physicians was proud to support the Queensland Branch of AFRM for their second Research Building Capacity Workshop. This hybrid event, held in person and online from the RACP QLD Boardroom in Herston, brought QLD AFRM trainees together to connect, share experiences, and learn from one another. We are thrilled that 100% of attendees found the workshop valuable and would recommend it to their colleagues. A special thank you to the mentors and, Professor Timothy Geraghty, Dr Letitia Burridge and Dr Teresa Boyle for facilitating this workshop for QLD AFRM trainees. The third and final workshop in this series is scheduled for March 2025. ALCOHOL SHOULD NOT BE CHEAPER THAN WATER The RACP and partners are disappointed that the Northern Territory Government is introducing a Bill to remove the alcohol floor price (minimum unit pricing) in the Northern Territory. We urge the NT Government not to abandon this alcohol harm reduction measure. READ OUR FACTSHEET: https://lnkd.in/gfkKVMyw The evidence is clear, we need to follow evidence-informed practice. MUP has lowered alcohol related deaths and hospitalisations, as well as alcohol related liver disease. Read this Lancet article to find out more ‘Evaluating the impact of alcohol minimum unit pricing on deaths and hospitalisations in Scotland: a controlled interrupted time series study’ https://lnkd.in/eaFkpMgA OPEN LETTER: https://lnkd.in/ghnrSXtQ Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE), Australian Medical Association, Menzies School of Health Research, Flinders University, Central Australian Aboriginal Congress Aboriginal Corporation, Danila Dilba Health Service, Urapuntja Health Service #MinuminUnitPricing #MUP #AlcoholHarm #FloorPricing

The RACP would like to acknowledge and observe the United Nations's #16DaysofActivism against gender-based violence. Despite the Anthony Albanese Labor Government's significant efforts to combat the ongoing violence across the country, rates of gender-based violence continues to permeate through Australian society. Gender-based violence requires a multi-level prevention and public health approach to ensure the safety of women and children across Australia. Today is Health Day at COP29. The RACP is calling for an urgent transition to zero emission renewable energy across all economic sectors with support to affected communities to protect health. We call on governments to recognise, prevent and address harms that fossil fuel developments pose directly to human health and indirectly through exacerbation of climate change. Climate change is a global public health emergency. The health focus at COP29 reflects the growing understanding that climate change has dire consequences for health. Whole-of-government, Health in All Policies approaches are required to safeguard health and bring about health benefits. https://lnkd.in/g3-y-8g2) Useful info: https://lnkd.in/gpPhXsmG

Please read this media release where the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC) warns AHPRA's plan won't fix doctor shortages in regional areas and key specialties. 'Without proper planning, new specialists may concentrate in urban areas while regional communities continue to face specialist shortages.'
