Our recent Managing Fatigue and Preventing Burnout Summit brought together stakeholders from across the health care and social assistance (HCSA) sector to raise awareness of the psychosocial hazards of fatigue and burnout, and to workshop how to better manage these hazards. Key insights from the day: ⚙️ Fix the work, not the worker - Designing work systems to manage fatigue and prevent burnout at an organisational level, instead of at worker level has proven to be more effective in addressing fatigue and burnout. ✅ Addressing fatigue and burnout reduces turnover, sick leave, and workers' compensation claims, saving time on replacements and recruitment, which boosts productivity, sustainability, and ensures continuity of care. Looking ahead to 2025, SafeWork NSW will publish an Industry Action Report with practical guidance to support employers in managing these risks. In the end, safer work leads to safer care. Avant Stone Pty Ltd were convicted and fined $450,000 after an incident at their Sydney warehouse. The warehouse was also used as a showroom, with one worker responsible for showing clients stone slabs and the other worker tasked with moving stone slabs around the warehouse using an overhead travelling crane. After showing clients the stone slabs, one worker stepped out to use the washroom facilities and on return found another worker partially crushed under two stone slabs which weighed approximately 315kg each. The worker suffered fatal injuries. The court found that the risk was clearly present when slabs were stored on A-frames without any means of restraining them if they tipped over. There were steps available to eliminate or minimise the risk and Avant Stone Pty Ltd did not have the appropriate systems in place. Avant Stone Pty Ltd have the right to appeal this sentence. Faces come in all different shapes and sizes, so you must have respiratory protective equipment (RPE) properly fit tested to ensure protection from hazardous dusts, fibres, fumes, mists, vapours and gases including asbestos fibres and silica dust. If your workers are required to wear RPE to protect themselves at work then, SafeWork NSW Inspectors can request evidence of fit testing. Regulatory action can be taken against workplaces that do not comply. Lithium-ion batteries can catch fire or even explode if damaged, exposed to heat sources or charged inappropriately. Continuing to charge a lithium-ion battery after it is full increases the risk of it catching fire. Failing to store, maintain, or use batteries correctly also impacts their performance and life. Inspect your batteries regularly for signs of damage. If detected, stop using them immediately and dispose of them appropriately. A 21-year-old male labourer has sustained serious burns to his body after refuelling a petrol-powered pressure washer while it was in use. The nozzle connected to the fuel container dislodged resulting in an uncontrolled release of petrol which ignited from the hot surface. To prevent similar incidents, employers must implement the following control measures: - Conduct a risk assessment - Follow refuelling protocols - Use only approved equipment - Establish well-ventilated areas for refuelling - Ensure firefighting equipment is readily available and workers are trained on its use - Ensure all workers wear personal protective equipment (PPE) during refuelling activities - Provide clear instruction, training and supervision to workers on the safe use, storage and handling of hazardous chemicals.
