Family violence can affect anyone in the community, but people with disability – especially women – face much greater risk. The statistics are alarming. 40% of women with disability have experienced physical violence after the age of 15, compared with 26% of those without disability. They are also twice as likely to experience sexual violence. The challenges are compounding, as women with disability often face different forms of family, domestic, and sexual violence, and additional barriers to getting help. This White Ribbon Month, we acknowledge the importance of spreading awareness about the intersection of abuse faced by women with disability and stand firm in our commitment to a safer, more inclusive society and ending all forms of violence. You can show your support too. If you are a frontline worker supporting people with disability who have been impacted by family, domestic, and sexual violence, we encourage you to explore 1800RESPECT's Disability Support Toolkit. We are proud to have worked with 1800RESPECT to ensure their services are accessible for people with communication difficulties. They have been awarded the Communication Access Symbol which recognises they meet standards to communicate successfully and respectfully with people with communication difficulties.
