New Off-Grid Island Airport Charger! The first in the world? To complete regular volume electric flights between Rottnest Island and Perth (Jandakot), we were required to build a grid independent charge option at the island airport as grid energy at the island is extremely limited. To solve this, we built G.I.R.C, a Grid Independent Regenerative Charger. GIRC quietly collects and stores solar energy all day and stores it for transfer to the aircraft. It has the capacity to facilitate up to 3 return electric flights per day from the island. It is of course, a basic proof of concept and due to the limitations of our lease, was not as grand, as large as beautiful or as branded as we would have liked. But it lays a foundation and sets a precedent for future upgrades as we continue to grow electric aviation in Australia and beyond. But it is very exciting, as we believe this creates the World's first electric aircraft enabled island airport!   So far we have only completed some 'soft opening' test flights, but would like to arrange a 'Grand opening' in January. Today I flew an Electric Pipistrel Aircraft to Wadjemup (Rottnest) Island, the 'place of spirits'. There's some spirits in the crosswind, that's for sure. I enjoyed grilled Skull Island Prawns thanks to the efforts of David Carter at the new Sunsets Bar at The Lodge. I charged the aircraft at the solar powered Fly On E Sustainable Aviation electric aircraft charger that any Skycademy member can use when they access the growing fleet of Skycademy decarbonised and electric aircraft. It was awesome to fly to this beautiful Eco Tourist destination with zero tailpipe emissions and almost zero noise that may other wise bother the local fauna and visitors to the picturesque location. The return flight included a scenic cruise along the mainland coast. I'm excited to share this with a passenger next time!
