Each year, Sonic HealthPlus proudly celebrates and supports the winner of the Ramazzini Prize as they attend and present their winning occupational health research at the annual ANZSOM Inc. Scientific Meeting. The 2024 recipient, Dr Jane Muir, shed critical light on silicosis and how screening requirements in most Australian industries and states, outside of engineered stone workers, are likely to be missing cases of silicosis. Between 2023 and 2024, Dr Muir monitored more than 200 tunnellers according to the guidelines developed for engineered stone workers. Surprisingly, all tunnellers who were diagnosed with silicosis had presented with normal chest x-rays the year prior according to tunnelling regulations. Dr Muir's findings highlight the critical need to re-evaluate and update the legislated screening requirements for silicosis in several other Australian industries. The National Transport Commission has released an updated National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers, to come into effect Monday, 11 November 2024. Our very own Chief Medical Officer, Dr Keith Adam and Regional Medical Officers, Drs Stuart Turnbull, David Jones and Dr Craig White were members of the Standard working groups and contributed to the revisions by providing recommendations and professional guidance on how to best manage and support rail workers' health.
