Fremantle Ports today proudly launched two new locally built pilot vessels that will facilitate efficient ship movements fundamental to the operations of the port. The $7.6 million Berkeley Class pilot vessels are West Australian-built in Geraldton by Dongara Marine and have a proven reputation as fast, reliable, comfortable and suitable for local conditions. The vessels, named Parker and Kwilena, are mastered by Fremantle Ports’ Small Craft team who deliver pilots to ships every day of the year, in a range of weather conditions. The boats also have a secondary role undertaking security patrols of port waters. Parker recognises former Fremantle Ports CEO the late Michael Parker who acknowledged the high-risk nature of marine pilot transfers and was committed to improving safety for all. Parker’s sister ship is named Kwilena, the Noongar word for dolphin reflecting the cultural significance of our waterways to the Whadjuk people. #Fremantleports #pilotboats #pilots #smallcraft

Meet Marine Rescue Dampier's 12m walk-around cabin RIB "Dampier Legend". Dongara Marine handed over this, our second custom-built search and rescue vessel for use by Marine Rescue Dampier, earlier this year. It is the first of four 12 metre RIBs contracted to date, and the RIB we have built so far. The new boat joined the 7.0 metre "Dampier Angel" delivered in 2023. Southerly Designs and Dongara Marine developed both twin and triple engine variants of this 12 metre cabin RIB and offer it with a range of outboard makes and powers. Marine Rescue Dampier opted for a pair of XF425 outboards from Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. Their combined 850hp produced a loaded speed of 42 knots on trials and enable significant towing capability. 1500 litres of fuel ensures long range and endurance, all of which adds up to fast response and sustained presence in search and rescue applications. In addition to the full walkaround cabin configuration, the vessel’s other special features include: • Highest specification (Level 4) Yamaha Helm Master EX digital boat control system including full manoeuvrability joystick control • Fully air conditioned and thermally insulated wheelhouse for personnel comfort • Four high quality suspension seats from Shockwave Seats • Antennas fitted to powered mounts to enable them to be raised and lowered from the helm console, for example when required for medivac operations with helicopters • Powered hinged mast base enabling controlled lowering and raising, again with remote operation from the wheelhouse • Lone Star marine electric drum anchor winch and below chine anchor stowage • Custom ladder system enabling personnel to embark and disembark vessel over the bow or sides The boat is in Australian Maritime Safety Authority NSCV 2C survey for 12 people. Dongara Marine also supplied a custom jinker trailer from as part of the contract. As with all new Marine Rescue vessels in Western Australia, "Dampier Legend" was built under contract to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. VESSEL REVIEW: The Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) recently took delivery of a new vessel to be used for fisheries research. Built to a design by Southerly Designs, the vessel has been named 'Djildjit Kaartadjiny' and replaces the DPIRD’s earlier research vessel 'George Cassels', which is no longer operational. The new boat will be based at Hillarys and used for a wide range of fisheries research and scientific activities across Western Australia. It will be deployed to survey and monitor the health of Western Australia’s fisheries including Western Rock Lobster, crabs, and demersal fish. The hydraulically operated A-frame was custom designed and manufactured to enable deployment of heavy equipment and nets weighing up to three tonnes. Also fitted at the transom is a folding stern launch and recovery ramp, which can be removed when not required.
