Podcast: This week, the consortium ELO2 beat out rival AROSE to win the right to create Australia’s upcoming lunar rover. The rover is designed to collect regolith, or Moon soil, that will eventually be turned into oxygen to support a permanent NASA base. It’s arguably the biggest and most exciting project Australia’s space sector has ever been involved with, and will work in tandem with NASA’s Aretmis mission to return humans to the lunar surface. Here, host Adam Thorn interviews two of the key figures at ELO2 overseeing the project: Lunar Outpost’s Joseph Kenrick and EPE Oceania’s Ben Sorensen. https://bit.ly/3VMUWSi

The ELO2 consortium has beaten AROSE to be tasked with building Australia’s upcoming lunar rover. The group were widely tipped to win after being the first to unveil its prototype late last year and have subsequently created four working versions, one of which was showcased at this year’s Australian Space Summit. The Australian Space Agency granted ELO2 and AROSE $4 million last year to design an initial prototype for a rover – later named Roo-ver – that will be developed to explore the Moon’s surface. https://bit.ly/3P0fqTM

James Cook University has installed Starlink on several remote sites and student accommodation in Queensland. The university said the locations – at Thursday Island, Burketown, Dajarra and Emerald – previously only had poor reception and were susceptible to regular outages. The installation of the LEO service was conducted with local Cairns infrastructure firm AirBridge and telco Vocus. https://bit.ly/4gjMna2

Podcast: Space Centre Australia plans to build a spaceport in far north Queensland that it hopes will become like an international airport for launch vehicles. However, unlike its local rivals, it believes it can one day host larger rockets manufactured by companies such as SpaceX. In this episode, SCA’s founder and CEO, James Palmer, joins host Adam Thorn to talk about the latest developments as well as the appointment of its new chairman, Scott Morrison. The pair also discuss the latest industry topics, including the high-profile cancelling of the JP 9102 tender with Lockheed Martin. https://bit.ly/4fjNKE8

NBN's satellite internet performance is so poor it would struggle to consistently play videos or handle online computer games, a new ACCC-backed report has revealed. The NBN geostationary service's latency averaged 664.9 milliseconds across all hours, compared to just 29.8 milliseconds on LEO rival Starlink. The findings will be a further blow to NBN, with critics arguing the federal government made the wrong call by launching two GEO satellites for $2 billion in 2015. https://bit.ly/4gUvhPZ

Equatorial Launch Australia has sensationally announced it will “immediately cease operations” at its spaceport in the Northern Territory and shift to a new site at Cape York in Queensland. In a strongly worded statement, ELA said the decision was “forced by the inability to finalise a lease” for the expansion of its Arnhem Space Centre, which it blamed on the Northern Land Council. It’s not known how the potential move would affect its current client contracts at its original site, which include two long-term tenants or any permits signed off by the Australian Space Agency. https://bit.ly/4go8b3K
