On current projections, without a concerted effort to reduce emissions, we will not be able to limit warming to the goal of 1.5°, and that will have dire consequences for our planet. Recognising the impact of shipping, the International Maritime Organisation has set targets to work towards net zero by 2050, and large shipping companies are following suit by adopting alternative fuels. While this is the correct approach for the health of our planet, the transition to alternative fuels cannot occur in isolation. It needs to be supported by a robust regime of safety regulations and a compensation scheme that is proactive rather than responsive. In this article, Beth O'Connor and Michelle Taylor discuss the impetus for change as well as the risks and benefits for the alternative fuels for ships, consider the Convention framework and why it matters, and highlight what all this means for vulnerable parties such as seafarers and port staff. #AusLaw #Law #MaritimeLaw #MaritimeIndustry #AlternativeFuels #NetZero https://lnkd.in/g43VDr9u

The NSW Government has released an update on Stage 2 of the Low and Mid-Rise Housing Policy (Policy), which is a change to development standards that will allow dual occupancies, multi-dwelling housing, residential flat buildings, and shop-top housing within 800 metres walking distance from selected town centres, and train, metro, and light rail stations. Stage 2 of the Policy, starting on 28 February 2025, will introduce new controls to town centres and stations in Greater Sydney, Central Coast, Lower Hunter and Newcastle, and Illawarra-Shoalhaven. In this article, Nick Ferguson and Catherine Morton consider how the Policy will affect existing planning controls, highlight where it will apply and the key provisions, and confirm the list of exclusions. #AusLaw #Law #EnvironmentAndPlanning #EnvironmentalLaw #PlanningLaw https://lnkd.in/gkCZZtw2
