The Central Coast Mariners Football Club has won the ‘Best Visual Game Day Experience’ award in the inaugural SDA Awards. Game days have the power to become unforgettable spectacles, and the Mariners have excelled over the past 12 months with their holistic approach to content during the 24-hour game day window. From their epic match day graphics and creative in-game stories to reactive post-game content, the Mariners consistently found innovative ways to elevate the fan experience, making their audience feel more connected and engaged 👏🏼 Well done Jordan Purcell and team.

It's a really important mandate for us at Sport Design Australia to provide more of a platform for creatives in sport. The SDA Awards is all about providing recognition for those who are busting ass day-in, day-out across our biggest rights-holders, teams, broadcasters, and publishers. We've been in the trenches with these amazing individuals, and they are often treated like they're at the bottom of the barrel. Or that anyone can do what they do. It's time to lift them up. Our first year has been all about getting something out there and taking in feedback to keep building each year. Please keep your eyes peeled as we start to release the winners of 2024. Thanks for the write-up B&T Aimee Edwards Keri Kitay

It’s fixture/schedule/draw release season for the Australian winter codes. First up, the AFL - Australian Football League released theirs last week so we’ve jumped into some of the numbers and trends across Instagram. A look at the numbers: — 16 clubs created a video to mark their fixture release. — 16 clubs utilised a carousel to deliver their fixture graphics — 3 clubs created a series of graphics to drip-feed their content — 5 clubs connected the fixture release with a commercial partner — 1 club released their fixtures on Instagram much later than others — 2 clubs delivered just a single graphic to display their complete season fixture Here are a few trends we noticed: 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲: There’s no standard volume for fixture release content. Some clubs created just one piece, while others produced up to seven. 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: There were almost no prompts for audiences to take action beyond simply consuming the content. 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲: Most clubs leaned into video to add an extra element of creativity, with 13 opting for humour as a key focus. 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸: Many clubs tied their releases to music, featuring nostalgic nods like So Fresh, CD cover-inspired designs, players playing instruments, and AI-generated songs. 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁: Carousels dominated AFL fixture releases, with 16 clubs using them to boost engagement and creativity, keeping fans swiping and interacting longer. And finally, a few shoutouts: 𝗨𝗻𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱: This was a close call, but Hawthorn Football Club takes the win for their animated video (check it out below). 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗲-𝗶𝗻-𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱: No surprises here - GWS GIANTS continue their signature subtle banter on socials. 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱: The Western Bulldogs nailed it with their 100-year anniversary story as read by Libba Senior. They were up there for the Tongue-in-cheek award. That’s the AFL fixture broken down. If you’d like to explore all 18 clubs' content, drop me a DM as I’ve collated all of the links into a single resource. Next up, the National Rugby League.
