Improving patient care and the healthcare of the community through medical research in St George & Sutherland Hospitals
About us
The St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation is an independent not-for-profit which supports the work of the medical research community at St George and Sutherland hospitals - two of Australia's leading teaching hospitals. We raise funds through both public and corporate donations, as well as through a suite of exciting fundraising events. These events are run under the Foundation's own unique LifeSupport banner. The funds that we raise are then distributed to eligible researchers through a rigorous funding round. The Foundation tries where possible to focus on up-and-coming researchers and on new and innovative research projects. We also fund capacity building projects that align with our objectives. To date we have supported projects from a broad spectrum of research fields. This reflects the Foundation's belief that a robust and varied research mix lies at the heart of a major teaching hospital.

At SSMRF, we support promising new medical research and emerging researchers to benefit people locally and around the world. Today, we take a look at one of our 2023 SSMRF grant recipients and his project - Dr Joel Poder. Dr Poder explains: “The current standard for measuring the success of prostate cancer treatment is a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. One disadvantage of using a PSA test in determining the success of radiotherapy treatment is that multiple PSA tests are performed over a period of time to confirm the suspicion of treatment failure, leaving the patient anxious and vulnerable to the development of metastases. The use of imaging techniques may be beneficial in overcoming this disadvantage. In collaboration with a team of researchers from the Biologically Targeted Radiotherapy (BiRT) team at the University of Sydney, we are exploring imaging methods to provide accurate early measures of treatment response.” Southern Cancer Care supported the grant for this project.
