It's the most wonderful time of the year ... for annual reports 😊 📊 1600 are now safe in the national collection, including State Library of Queensland’s own, which was among nearly 8000 Queensland publications deposited during the last financial year!

📘 It must be Annual Report season! Since 1 July, more than 1600 annual reports have been deposited into Australia's national collection. These reports are a snapshot of the activities and successes of organisations, clubs and departments across Australia, and will be preserved in the NED collection for future generations.    📖 You can find NSLA’s own annual report is among the collection, https://lnkd.in/g2VDZkeX ➡️ If you belong to an organisation that produces an annual report, remember that depositing it into NED will ensure that it becomes a valued part of the national collection for future generations.

  • The State Library’s new My Digital Skills Development program was a key feature of this year’s #IKCWorkshop! Designed to inspire staff to enhance their digital skills and empower them to become digital mentors within their communities, IKC teams enjoyed a fun, hands-on opportunity to explore creative digital tools. The interactive workshops showcased innovative new digital programs co-designed by the State Library and First Nations communities, including digital storytelling, digital art, and pocket cinema. We also had an exciting eSports demo from Veteran Gaming Australia. Check out some of the amazing workshop creations set to inspire new digital activities and engagement within IKC communities. #DigitalInclusionQld #GrowingIKCs #DigitalSkills

  • We were excited to present a preview of the State Library’s Digital and You app at the #IKCWorkshop yesterday.    This innovative app will enable users to find free face-to-face and online digital skills programs, make bookings, receive reminders, and track and celebrate their progress.   The app will provide program administrators with tools to create dynamic digital workshop listings, manage ticketing, and tailor communications to boost attendance and keep learners engaged.   We believe the app will be a game-changer in supporting digital inclusion and skills development in Queensland communities when it goes live later this year.    #DigitalInclusionQld #DigitalQld #DigitalandYouApp

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the launch of the Growing Indigenous Knowledge Centres (IKCs) project and the Digital and You campaign in Cairns last night.    The occasion also marked the opening of the 2024 IKC Workshop and was attended by IKC staff and guests from across Queensland, including council representatives from Cherbourg, Torres Strait, Napranum and Doomadgee. The evening began with a Welcome to Country by Gavin Singleton, a Yirrganydji Traditional Owner and Project Manager for Dawul Wuru Aboriginal Corporation.    State Librarian Vicki McDonald AM FALIA highlighted the value of IKCs as safe and welcoming spaces for communities to learn, connect, share and preserve knowledge, and as places of meaningful conversations and powerful storytelling.  The #GrowingIKCs project is delivered in partnership with 15 First Nations councils to boost digital inclusion in some of Queensland’s most remote communities.    The project will also support communities that do not currently have IKCs, with Kowanyama, Doomadgee, and Mornington Island soon to establish digital models of IKCs.     Funded through the Our Thriving Digital Future, Queensland Digital Economy Strategy, the project was officially launched by special guest speaker Chris McLaren, the Queensland Government’s Chief Customer and Digital Officer.   Follow us for more news as the #IKCWorkshop continues this week! #IKCWorkshop #GrowingIKCs #DigitalAndYou #DigitalQld #DigitalInclusionQld @Daragh Galvin

  • 'On the night of the 10th Foch ordered all operations to cease at 11 o’clock next day. The 1st and 4th Australian Divisions were then arriving in the region about le Cateau. Neither there nor at the front was there any general demonstration - the sound of guns ceased; the gates of the future silently opened. Wonder, hope, grief, too deep and uncertain for speech, revolved for days in almost every man’s mind while, in the British zone at least, army life went on as usual pending the next decisions'. – Charles Bean, Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918. Today we remember the signing of the Armistice at 5:15 am in the Compiègne Forest, 108 years ago. This document marked the defeat of the German Empire, the ultimate victory of the Entente Powers and the end of 4 years of bloody warfare. The Austro-Hungarian Empire had surrendered at Villa Giusti 8 days earlier, and the Ottomans on 30 October at Mudros. From Ypres to Istanbul, Europe was left ablaze figuratively and literally, with empires on the brink of revolution and collapse. Australia had thankfully escaped devastation on the mainland, but the social upheaval was extensive. The conscription referendums had divided Australian society and caused political chaos. Industrial warfare in the Middle East and Western Front had left over 60,000 Australians dead, 10,000 of them Queenslanders. A further 159,000 were physically wounded or taken prisoner, with an unknown number of returned servicemen suffering shellshock. Today we further remember those who have served, and continue to serve, at home and overseas; through World War II, Korea, Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam, Timor Leste, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other conflicts and peacekeeping. They have put themselves at risk in service of Australia and suffered the human cost. Lest we forget. Bean C (1942) ‘Volume VI – The Australian Imperial Force in France during the Allied Offensive, 1918’, Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918, Angus and Robertson LTD, Sydney. ‘Mounted troops leading servicemen in Armistice Day Peace Parade, Townsville, Queensland, 11 November, 1918,’ 1918, John Oxley Library, State Library of Queensland. ‘Crowds gathered to watch Armistice Day Peace Parade, Townsville, Queensland, 11 November, 1918,’ 1918, John Oxley Library, State Library of Queensland.
