On This Day in 1856 the Library first opened its doors. Our founders believed that access to knowledge was critical for the development of a civil and prosperous community, and created the Library as 'the people’s university' – a place of learning and discovery for all Victorians. Each year we add more than 70,000 heritage items to our rich collection, which now includes material on almost every subject you can think of, with a special focus on items from Victoria. From art, children’s books, and family history to film, business and industry, there is plenty for curious browsers and serious researchers alike. The Library was envisioned as a 'great emporium of learning,' and we continue to be a place where curiosity thrives, knowledge is shared, and every visit offers something new to discover.
