We invite you to Stormwater Shepherd's latest clean-up in Sydney Olympic Park at Powells Creek Reserve's Mangrove Forest. Sponsored by Atlan Stormwater and supported by Strathfield Council, City of Canada Bay, and Parramatta River Catchment Group. With the nearby catchments feeding into Parramatta River, we will be cleaning the local waterways to prevent the conveyance of stormwater pollution downstream - preserving this iconic riverside for the local community. About us
Stormwater Shepherds are a global charity initiative targeting plastic litter and urban pollution in aquatic environments. Our mission is to guide and inform global communities on how to stop plastic and urban pollution at the source – the home, the business and the stormwater drain so all lifeforms can enjoy clean water for future generations. Urban generated pollution accounts for a staggering 80% of ocean plastic, producing approximately 8 million tons of ocean plastic litter annually and if the trend continues growing to 29 million tonnes by 2040. As the primary conveyor of pollution into local waterways, stormwater pollution usually starts in urban catchments. Downstream problems can stem from toxic chemicals and plastics entering our waterways and other pollutants - sediment, animal waste, organic matter, car emissions, and tyre rubber. Much of our pollution starts a long way from our beaches and rivers. It can also lead to entanglement and the bioaccumulation of chemical compounds in our food chains and inevitable ingestion by marine life, animals, and humans. Through a mix of blue, green and grey infrastructure, correct stormwater management will capture all contaminates before it ends up in our riparian environments, bays, harbours, and oceans and help mitigate surface water. A key pressure on local councils is the ability to manage the escalating progression and value of stormwater assets. Sadly, some councils face leaving stormwater assets off asset management records and maintenance programs from an insufficient operational budget. Stormwater Shepherds advocates for long-term sustainable approaches to successfully controlling pollution through correctly managed and funded stormwater. We are stormwater experts committed to improving the quality of our urban waterways through research, green and grey stormwater infrastructure, and knowledge sharing and assistance to governments, councils and the community nationally.

We thank all our volunteers from Atlan Stormwater & Pfizer for their work picking up gross pollutants, litter and dumped rubbish during our clean-up at Callan Park, Lilyfield, NSW. It was an amazing day supporting the 🌊🌳🌞 protection of this waterfront heritage parkland. Situated on the Parramatta River, this prominent waterway is the largest tributary to Sydney Harbour. Cleaning up this riverside location will not only help sustain local environments, but stop the conveyance of pollution downstream to receiving waterbodies - and ultimately, the Pacific Ocean. #AtlanStormwater #JoyInWater #Pfizer #CallanPark #NSW

Studies by the CSIRO and the University of Toronto have revealed that up to 11 million tonnes of plastic pollution resides in deep-sea reservoirs. A large portion of this pollution is conveyed by stormwater to our waterways and marine environments - and includes cups, bottles, plastic consumables and microplastics. The correct treatment of stormwater helps to capture this pollution before it enters our waterways, but we can all take steps to minimise our plastic footprint by following the 5 R's - Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Replace & Refuse. Together, we can reduce the amount of plastic pollution in our marine environments. #StormwaterSheperds #plasticpollution #plasticfootprint #marineenvironment

We thank all attendees for our latest clean-up at Monee Ponds Creek and Yarra River - and the team from Atlan Storwmwater, Pfizer and Stormwater Shepherds for their work removing pollution from these iconic Melbourne waterways. Together, we cleaned up these local areas to reduce the impacts of urban pollution on the city's local riverine environments - and to stop the conveyance of rubbish to receiving water bodies like Hobson Bay & Port Phillip. #StormwaterSheperds #AtlanStormwater #Pfizer #MoneePondsCreek #YarraRiver #cleanup

Stormwater flows off impervious surfaces in our urban environment - which includes areas around our 🏘️ homes and surfaces that do not soak water such as roofing, driveways and tiles! In a heavy storm, 100mm of rainfall results in 100 litres of runoff per square metre, or roughly 20,000L for a medium sized suburban home. This puts into perspective the demands of our stormwater network - which is vital infrastructure that removes pollutants carried by stormwater, and slows flows to prevent flooding. #StormwaterSheperds #rainfall #urbanenvironment #floodprevention #pollutants

Yesterday was great weather for a clean up in Logan, Brisbane - as the team from Atlan Stormwater and Pfizer hit Scrubby Creek to remove stormwater pollution like plastic bottles, litter, and take away packaging, and various dumped waste including a bicycle, car tyre and surfboard. Scrubby Creek is Logan’s second largest catchment, and spans from Greenbank in Logan's west to Meadowbrook in the east. Feeding into Slacks Creek, these waterways are tributaries to the Logan River - we 👏 thank our participants for removing these pollutants in this large urban catchment to stop their conveyance downstream. #StormwaterSheperds #ScrubbyCreek #stormwaterpollution #volunteerwork #cleanupaustralia

SQIDEP is the Stormwater Quality Improvement Device Evaluation Protocol, which is Stormwater Australia's innovative framework to ensure devices are verified for their pollution removal performance - supporting cleaner, healthier waterways, and improving water quality. Our stormwater network is essential to sustainable, liveable communities, and SQIDEP helps engineers, councils and developers to choose infrastructure that captures urban pollutants and protects our aquatic environments. #SQIDEP #StormwaterAustralia #pollutants #stormwatertreatment #stormwaterdevices

Green infrastructure provides a naturalised approach to building our stormwater network - and supports the design of sustainable, liveable cities. The maintenance of these assets is imperative to protecting our waterways and oceans! These systems offer a modern way of implementing stormwater treatment solutions that meet our cities' needs for sustainability, resilience, and eco-friendly design philosophies - while also maintaining vibrant green spaces for our communities to share. #StormwaterSheperds #greeninfrastructure #zeropollutionambassador

Trash traps collect floating debris, rubbish and plastic pollution in water bodies such as rivers, oceans and estuaries. These vital interventions are one way of helping to remove pollution from our riverine and marine environments. The correct management of stormwater helps to remove these pollutants in our urban catchments - preventing their conveyance downstream with devices such as GPTs (Gross Pollutant Traps). Combining stormwater treatment with downstream infrastructure is a versatile approach to protecting our waterways, seas and oceans. #InternationalTrashTrapNetwork #StormwaterShepherds #GPT #trashtraps #urbanpollution
