Big thanks to the team at the Sydney University Law Society (SULS) for hosting Streeton Lawyers at yesterday’s Public Interest Careers Fair. It was great to see so many aspiring lawyers so passionate about social justice. Some students were surprised to see a criminal defence firm at a public interest fair which gave us the opportunity to speak about our experience representing people from all walks of life. Even if we didn’t have quite as many goodies to give away as the Legal Aid stall next to ours, we hope we opened some minds to the vital role that defence firms like ours play in social justice advocacy.

Today the High Court delivered its decision in Cook (A Pseudonym) v The King. In delivering this important decision, the majority allowed the appeal which related to a statutory construction argument concerning s. 293(4) of the Criminal Procedure Act 1986 (NSW). Our Principal Justin Wong appeared in the Law Society Journal in this great article by Karl Hoerr on road trauma and the current review of serious road crime offences in NSW. “The question then becomes, [do higher maximum penalties] act as a greater general deterrence in the community? I think it’s questionable whether it does."

It's ANZAC day and double demerits are in force from midnight Thursday 24 April to midnight on Sunday 28 April in NSW.
