Anonymous harm reporting for schools. 95,000 notifications in 2022. Empowering students to seek help or report harm.
About us
Australia has embedded cultural norms about staying silent. “Dobbers” and “snitches” are vilified and many of us can’t find the courage to call out racist, sexist and dehumanising behaviour. Our young people struggle to sacrifice their ‘social currency’ to find the courage to #saysomething in emergent situations involving bullying, peer-to-peer conflict and serious harm. Stymie is a verb that by definition, means to prevent or stop. We seek to challenge the accepted cultural norms of bystanding behaviours, by providing a safe place for young people to anonymously report any kind of harm, igniting the welfare and allied supports embedded in their school’s wellbeing framework. Stymie is Australia’s only online, anonymous harm reporting tool for students who are seeing or experiencing harm. We deliver encrypted, anonymous notifications to authorised recipients (adult humans!) in schools who respond according to their organisation's wellbeing or pastoral framework. Everyday … 1 in 4 youth experience mental, emotional or physical abuse or trauma. 1 in 8 Australians end their life through suicide (this startling statistic has remained static since 2008) 7 out of every 30 Australians, will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only 2 will reach out for support. 1 in 3 women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence perpetrated by a man since the age of 15 (ABS Personal Safety Survey, Australia, 2016) We have a vision for a world where young people have access to the help they need, always. All Ways. #saysomething

Through Stymie, young people have asked for help 33,237 times so far this year. They have asked for help with issues such as: family and domestic violence, sexual abuse, suicidal thoughts, personal safety and cyberbullying and bullying. In the first 5 months of 2024, we've spoken to 24,000 students in 30 schools across Queensland, NSW, Victoria, SA and WA. We’ve also reached parents in these communities with presentations about keeping children safe and well in online places. Never have Australian youth been in such urgent need for help. The Australian Child Maltreatment study has found that peer-on-peer sexual assault is increasing with nearly one in five young people aged 16 to 24 having been sexually assaulted by another teen. 13.2% were abused by another teen they knew. 5.7% have been assaulted by a current or former romantic partner. This abuse results in an increase in mental health problems for Australian teens, often well into their future. https://lnkd.in/g_xkXcf3 We also know that Australian students are the second most bullied only behind Latvia, in OECD countries. This has a direct impact on their feelings of safety at school, academic performance, psychological safety, and mental health. https://lnkd.in/gftfXrtj As one part of a school’s wellbeing framework, Stymie offers our young people a way to ask for help or report harm they see happening to others. Together, we're making a difference. #stymie #saysomething #studentsfirst #kindnessalways #forthekids #safespacesforlearning #wegotyou #wehearyou #childprotection #healtheharm #preventtheharm #cultureofcare Rachel Downie 🧡💛🩶

Every student we spoke to agreed they would #saysomething if they saw harm happening to someone! We conducted an Evaluation of Stymie at eight Queensland schools during the final term of 2023. It has shown that the culture of care in these Stymie Schools is strong, with every student surveyed agreeing they would take some form of action if they saw harm happening to someone. At 92%, making a Stymie Notification was the preferred choice of action. Speaking directly to a Teacher or Adult was the second preference with 69% of students reporting they would be comfortable to say something. As always, we learned a lot from both the students and the staff we spoke to. Following the feedback, we are putting plans in place to implement some of the suggested changes to the platform, new ideas for engagement, and to the way we work. Thank you to the following schools for your time and helpful feedback: Beerwah SHS, Bribie Island SHS, Caboolture SHS, Corinda SHS, Fortitude Valley State Secondary College, Hervey Bay SHS, St Luke's Anglican School, St Teresa’s Catholic College. Together, we're making a difference. 🧡💛🩶 #stymie #saysomething #studentsfirst #kindnessalways #forthekids #wegotyou #wehearyou #childprotection #healtheharm #cultureofcare
