Spotted in a Brisbane cafe, Nicole Bennetts RPIA of the Planning Institute of Australia reading "The Next Australian City" from Suburban Futures. (Truth be told, Nicole's already familiar with the book, which won PIA's overall Queensland award for Planning Excellence last year. We will forever be humbled with that unexpected award, and we really wanted to get this photo of Nicole with the book to add to the hall of fame). Ground breaking stuff
Chair, Lord Mayor's Better Suburbs Initiative; Director Suburban Futures; National Executive Committee ULI Australia; Independent advisor.
Stones Corner is Brisbane's new suburban renewal precinct. Hear from Mark Stockwell of Stockwell how the early impetus to update a dated nighbourhood plan came about. And hear from Cr Adam Allan BCC Chair of City Planning and Suburban Renewal (and now also Chair of Economic Development), how the Council was able to move quickly with community and industry support, with a unanimous in favour decision in Council (yes, even the greens!). The lessons learned here can be applied elsewhere but you need to understand what made this work. The Suburban Futures event is open to everyone. Feb 20 at 4pm at The Brooklyn Standard in Eagle Lane, the City. Just $50 + GST and eventbrite fee. Tickets here: https://lnkd.in/gA9w5YWj

Some say worsening housing affordability is a global thing. Which doesn't explain the first chart. Maybe the second chart has something to do with housing in Australia and Canada?

Hon Sam O'Connor MP is Queensland's Housing Minister, and Minister for Public Works and Youth. But he still finds time to delve into "The Next Australian City" in between appointments. We wonder what in particular will capture his imagination? Copies are available direct from the publisher Anthony Cappello at Connor Court or via Amazon. https://lnkd.in/g3yr-Z2T

The remarkable story of Stones Corner. Hear developer Mark Stockwell of Stockwell explain how he encouraged fellow land owners to support a fresh vision for the precinct, and what this means for his Aldi site redevelopment. Hear also from Brisbane City Council Chair of City Planning and Suburban Renewal Cr Adam Allan how Council responded to the market led vision with a new precinct plan, now signed off by the State Government. This wasn't just fast but also led to an outcome that received unpredented unanimous support from all parties in Council. Learn what this means for other precincts in the city and how market led precinct renewal is now a planning and development reality. February 20th at 4pm. Tickets just $50+GST and Eventbrite fees. All welcome. Tickets here: https://lnkd.in/gBmCxsYz

The truth about traffic: the usual suspects are not what is causing congestion. If not, what is causing it, and what can we do about it? Suburban Futures directors Lisa Nixon Simon Horne and Ross Elliott explain the research in this short video. https://lnkd.in/gcJhXbUc
