You will need to give up your contact details for a copy so I'll summarise why it matters here. 1. operating system speed matters for allowing programs to run more efficiently on a specific microcontroller 2. or allowing a smaller more power efficient microcontroller to run the same software tasks 3. or for more time critical actions to be able to operate in a single microcontroller without needing coprocessors 4. size matters because you can use a less expensive part to do the same job The net result is less power consumption, less hardware cost and better behaved systems. Some exciting news. We have been awarded Best Australian Designed & Made Electronics Products 2024 by APAC Insider in their Australia Made Awards 2024. I'm particularly pleased with this one because it cover: - Designed in Australia - Made in Australia in a single award. I was asked what we did to receive this so here is a quick peak at that. It was an overall award. FY23/24 we did more than 200 design projects and 50 different production runs. Examples are in the field of: - high voltage power distribution - VMS trailers (solar powered roadside LED signs) - digital bagpipe - multiple logistics and tracking projects - custom robust automotive proxcard readers - full sunlight IR communications - commercial fishing reel controller and accessories - custom water metrology and protection systems - atheletic training system - cell therapy - scent management - furnace oxygen sensors - boutique guitar effects pedals - production automated test equipment (multiple units) - cathodic monitoring (detecting rusting) - railway high reliability flashers - automotive UPS for police digital radios - plumbers safety testers (aid to prevent electrocution) Off the top of my head #madeInAustralia #designedInAustralia #AustralianMade #AustralianElectronicsManufacture

Startup success depends on several factors. But before looking at that, I would like to point out that the typical Silicon Valley startup model does not work in Australia because our business environment lacks 3 things that this model depends on: - high levels of collaboration (we rank last in the world for that) - easy access to finance (bottom 12% of the world for that) - standardised deals and contracts (we have low management competence) So with that in mind, clearly some startups do get off the ground and some do phenomenally well. Lets start with what to look for. You will need one of these 4 things: - breakthrough idea for an existing problem and access to enough finance to get to demonstration level. [Disruptive Innovation] - completely new idea for an emerging area that takes off. [Technology Emergence] - Better technology or business model for an existing market that allows you to capture an under-serviced segment or poorly-serviced segment. [Incremental Innovation] - complementary offering that can be leveraged to build a stronger overall market position for an existing player. [Commercial Leverage] Currently, the greatest area of Innovation is in business models rather than technology. So don't rule out Incremental Innovation's potential. Most success is not via the Disruptive Innovation path. Given the above, what would someone wanting to back a startup in Australia look for: - clear demonstration of a viable solution - market segment they were comfortable investing in - strong management team that knows how to scale to a successful enterprise Other parts of the world will have their own experience of what makes a successful startup. This is my take on Australia. Let's flip this. How to have an unsuccessful startup in Australia? - no collaboration - greed and wanting to keep all the $ - don't build solid management capability - rely on a grant or government handout I've come to this conclusion through 27 years of serving Australian Manufacturing businesses and some startups by providing the electronics and software components they needed for their solution. And from having to do this for myself. "Let's make electronics in Australia!" isn't an obvious place to start but it works if you start with that as the end goal. My biggest competitor is not another business that does electronics design. My biggest competitor is the idea in people's minds that you can't successfully manufacture in Australia any more. IEEE survey of programming languages has been released for 2024 and the shift from 2022 is pretty big. Python clearly dominates and for the first time there is a noticeable decline in C and C++ use relative to other languages. This is getting worse. A very disturbing report shows 45% of small business owners in Australia considered closing their business in the last 12 months. Small business is 96% of all businesses and the major source of employment in Australia.
