Many of our members gathered in Canberra recently for our 2024 AGM and to start to plan our strategy for the next three years. Over dinner we were thrilled to be joined online by Hans Jöhr, former Corporate Head of Agriculture, Nestlé, and one of the initiators for the establishment of SAI Platform and Robert Erhard, current President of the Platform and Nestlé's Head of Dairy, Corporate Sustainable Agricultural Development. It was great to hear their thoughts about what's happening to support and encourage sustainable food production and to tap into their extensive knowledge and wisdom. We look forward to working closely in 2025 with SAI Platform

Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform Australia members are looking deeply into how to reduce scope 3 emissions. Well done to Jack Holden for being part of this discussion at #UNGCA #UnitingBusiness recent event.
The introduction of mandatory climate reporting in Australian has led to a lot of new interest in scope 3 emissions. The role that reporting plays in reducing emissions was a key point from this panel session at this week’s #UNGCA #UnitingBusiness event in Sydney. Big thanks to Anna Stewart from Coles who ably chaired the session and also to Devinka Piyasena BlueScope, Barbara Nebel ThinkStepANZ and Tom Rochford for their honest insights and deep expertise. Thanks also to the #UNGCA for organising the program. Some really great input for business leaders and for sustainability practitioners. Key points on the Scope 3 reporting challenges for me were: Help suppliers also derive value. Are there insights, business improvements or benchmarking that could be done with this data? Can we match the effort and accuracy with the real needs of the reporting audience? This will be especially important for SMEs who may supply, and report to, many customers. Finally let's make sure we are tracking the real emissions trends over time – not just the noise in our reporting systems. Great to see Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform Australia members front and centre at this event - President, Michael Anderson from GrainCorp and Laura Grubb from Greenham
The Digital Agrifood Summit has been drilling down on what it will take to verify sustainability on the global stage. With feedlotter Tess Herbert, Laura Grubb from beef processor Greenham, Michael Anderson from Graincorp and UN/CEFAT Steven Capell Panel moderator Piers Hogarth-Scott sums up the discussion. "Developing frameworks for cohesive definitions, for example, whether that's definitions around regen ag or sustainability, and how that can be applied more broadly across commodities," he said. "There's also work being done around standards as well, so that we talk common language as we are trading between nations. "There's also the question around who is actually best placed to tell the cohesive Australian story to the world - that's not resolved yet." #sustainability #traceability #agtech Charles Sturt University Charles Sturt - AgriPark Deloitte GrainCorp Greenham

October is a busy month for those leading the charge towards a more sustainable Australian agriculture sector. There's the Global Nature Positive Summit in Sydney this week. Then the Australian Farm Institute is holding its annual Roundtable in Canberra on 22nd October. SAI Platform Australia is also heading to Canberra for our AGM and 2025-2028 Strategy Planning on 23 October. The next day we will run a Forum to discuss "How do we decarbonize the supply chain?" We'll hear from our members across the agriculture, food and fisheries supply chain about the actions that can be taken, are being taken, and will be taken to decarbonize. Members will hear from University of Melbourne leading academic Richard Eckard, representatives from DAFF and DCCEEW about policy implementation, industry (including AFI), production sectors and supply chain businesses. This annual forum is one of many benefits of SAI Platform Australia membership. Get in touch if you think your business would like to be involved in great peer-to-peer learning.

The first stop on the 2024 SAI Platform Aus Field Trip was to Tasmanian Landcare Award winner Tim Reed's farm at Rosevale in the West Tamar Valley. Together with his wife Katherine, Tim has turned their small property around. He is passionate about improving soil health and has even used poppy mulch to boost nutrients. He has trenched and piped in water to multiple paddocks so that he can rotate his stock regularly and had has erect extensive wallaby proof fencing! He's building a dam to be more drought resilient and planting trees for shelter for stock. He has put a lot of thought it improving his farm and doing it sustainably.

Last week SAI Platform Australia members and guests spent 3 days in Tasmania (Lutruwita) visiting innovative farmers focussed on doing the best they can to produce food & fibre sustainably. Soil health, paddock and crop rotations, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, riparian planting and revegetation were some of the topics we saw and discussed. Here's a photo of the group including: SAI President, Michael Anderson, Committee members Jack Holden and Jessica Loughland, as well as staff from SAI member organisations, Catherine Lescun from Dairy Australia, Patrick Forrest from Fonterra, as well as guests Bill Pardy from Nutrien Ag Solutions and Kate Petrie from Ingelby Farms, at the beautiful "Beaufront" property at Ross in the Midlands. Our thanks to the von Bibra family for welcoming us into their kitchen, woolshed and paddocks.

Starting the day with this beautiful photo from Tasmania's West Tamar Valley. This was the view SAI Platform Aus members saw when we visited the Field Applied Research (FAR) Australia Ltd crop trial site at Hagley. Stay tuned for more great photos and updates from last week's Field Trip to Tas ... it was a great three days of visiting and learning from innovative farmers. Great to have SAI Platform Committee members on the trip - Michael Anderson, Jack Holden, Jessica Loughland.

The 2024 SAI Platform Aus Field Trip will be to Northern and Midlands Tasmania, 15-17 May, where farmers are experiencing ongoing dry conditions which will provide context for the role of regenerative agriculture resilience. We have an interesting and action packed program lined up. Previous field trips have highlighted the value of this great mix of getting out in paddocks with innovative farmers, exploring research, meeting people committed to sustainable agriculture and food production, as well as the opportunity to engage with other SAI members. If you're not a member of SAI Platform Australia but would like to know more this field trip or other members benefits, please get in touch. https://lnkd.in/gs4yzxXa Here's a great photo from our 2022 Field Trip to Wagga.
