New research from the University of Tasmania and Monash University on AI in mining was recently published in Nature Portfolio's #NatureCommunications. According to the research, co-authored by University of Tasmania Professor Joaquin Vespignani, Australia risks losing its world-leading advantage in critical and rare minerals used for clean energy, electric vehicles and batteries for solar energy unless it embraces artificial intelligence in the mining sector. “Without significant investment by governments around the world in AI within the mining industry to increase productivity and improve environmental practices, there is a high risk that the clean energy transition will become costly for communities, potentially slowing down decarbonisation efforts,” he said. The University of Tasmania Tax Clinic has been awarded over $280,000 from the Australian Government as part of the National Tax Clinic Program to provide vital tax services for vulnerable and at-risk Tasmanians. According to Tax Clinic Director Donovan Castelyn CA, CTA, this funding will profoundly impact the community and allow the Tax Clinic to continue its vital mission to provide free tax advice, support and education to Tasmanians while building the skills of the next generation of tax professionals. “For some, an extra hundred dollars in their tax return doesn’t mean much, but for others, it is life-changing,” he said. “We are delighted to be able to keep delivering those life-changing moments for Tasmanians thanks to this grant." “This additional funding means that not only can we maintain our operations but expand them to broaden the scope of our support and make it easier for all eligible community members to access our services.” The Tax Clinic was also recently awarded $43,590 in additional funding from the Australian Government through the Pacific Australian Labour Mobility (PALM) initiative as part of the National Tax Clinic Program.
