When mentally healthy it is easier to connect with others and manage oneself. Health professionals have a higher risk of developing mental health issues due to the nature of their work. Each year Mental Health Australia conduct a survey of healthcare workers, and the most recent results indicate, 68% of staff shortages are due to burnout, stress and other mental health conditions with high numbers leaving their profession. Of the healthcare workers experiencing burnout, more than two-thirds struggle with sleep problems and a lack of energy, 93% reporting tiredness and fatigue. Recent research in physiotherapy found that most mentors have no formal training for the role. However, there is a growing demand for health professional mentors, so professional development activities to support them in their roles are important. This week, we are recommending a journal article that shares the principles of Trauma Informed Care. Trauma-informed care approaches patients’ healthcare needs with sensitivity to any trauma that they may have experienced to prevent any re-traumatisation. When used effectively, trauma-informed care enables health professionals to communicate in ways that build trust and understanding with their patients. Most adults report experiencing significant trauma at some point and the impact of childhood trauma can last a lifetime. Consequently, for health professionals who work to support the physical and mental well-being of patients, it is helpful to understand the principles of trauma-informed care.
