Groundbreaking work set to make cataract surgery available to all in Laos... With support from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's #ANCP, we're working with the Laos Ministry of Health to make eye health care accessible and affordable for everyone who needs it, with the aim of eliminating untreated cataract in a decade. "We're not just offering eye surgeries; we're helping create a sustainable healthcare system," says our Senior Health Economist Jack Hennessy. That would help children stay in school, family members return to work, and the country's standard of living improve. Today, we honour their resilience, acknowledge the deep injustices of forced removal, and stand firm in our commitment to truth, justice, and self-determination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Apology was a step forward but true reconciliation demands action and we #StayTrue2Uluru, supporting Voice, Treaty, and Truth. "Leave the world a better place." That's what the program for the opening of the intraocular lens (IOL) lab in Asmara, Eritrea, said - around this time of year 31 years ago. Fred helped pave the way for this lab and it's gone on to produce millions of IOLs and make sight-restoring surgery possible for people around the world who couldn't otherwise have afforded it.
