Yesterday, The Reily Foundation and the Direct Experience Group (DEG) proudly represented the voices of lived experience at the 2024 South Australian Child Protection Symposium. Our CEO, Nadia Bergineti, joined a distinguished panel discussion exploring evidence-based interventions and systemic reforms for a stronger, more compassionate child protection system. Breony Carbines, Hayley Brown representing The DEG also facilitated a breakout session on the transformative power of lived experience in policy design, showcasing how meaningful insights from parents and carers can drive impactful change. The Hon. Katrine Hildyard MP, Minister for Child Protection, delivered a powerful address on reimagining child protection and was an integral presence throughout the day. Her ongoing support and commitment to collaborative reform set the tone for the Symposium, underscoring the need for community-driven solutions. These sessions highlighted the importance of collaboration, early intervention, and amplifying lived experience to build a system that truly supports children and families. Thank you to the Department for Child Protection, South Australia, Katrine Hildyard MP, and all participants for making this vital event possible. Together, we are shaping the future of child protection in South Australia.

Our submission highlights critical challenges within the child protection system that arise from domestic violence and emphasizes the importance of a trauma-informed approach. With over 50% of the families engaging with Reily’s services affected by domestic violence, we advocate for policies that support protective parents and provide balanced interventions. By sharing insights from lived experiences, we aim to foster a system that prioritizes family safety, respects the voices of survivors, and emphasizes preventive measures to break cycles of harm. A recent article in The Advertiser reported on child runaways from State care, with thousands of children fleeing every year. Our CEO, Nadia Bergineti, said: “While a significant number of children are returned to care, the fact that so many repeatedly leave care highlights deep problems within the South Australian child protection system.” At The Reily Foundation, we work directly with families who have been through the system, and we know the importance of including their voice in shaping decisions about their children’s futures. According to the Australian Institute of Family Studies, family-inclusive decision-making can reduce the time children spend in out-of-home care and increase the likelihood of reunification by up to 25%.
