ACCI’s July small business survey revealed that nearly half of small businesses have considered closing in the past year. Writing for The Australian ACCI CEO Andrew McKellar says that is not surprising given the increased red tape burden on business, including onerous requirements of the industrial relations system. In his opinion piece Mr McKellar proposes a practical change to help address the issue: an expansion of the definition of small business in the Fair Work Act to mean any business with fewer than 25 employees instead of the current 15. “This one, simple, numerical change will allow many thousands of new businesses to escape the crushing red tape burden that comes with the workplace relations system,” said Mr McKellar. Writing for The West Australian today, David Alexander argues that Australian businesses are being stifled by over-regulation and red tape and this is being reflected in our diminishing growth rate. Running through just a sample of the newest rules and regulations faced by business, David emphasises that "The point is not that particular issues might warrant government attention - sometimes they do - but whether the cost of imposing extra burdens on business people is being taken into account." In 2024, more than a third of small business owners told us they'd been diagnosed with a mental health condition by their doctor. That's significantly higher than in the general population (22%), and also significantly higher than small business owners reported in 2022 (21%). Good to see the Government providing additional funding to help combat this increasing problem. Please share this widely with your small business contacts. These kinds of initiatives only work if the people they aim to help know about them! Julie Collins, Alyson Chin, Bryce Roney

Andrew McKellar explains on Sky News Australia that the disappointing MYEFO figures reflect a “two speed economy". “We're seeing the private sector really bouncing along the bottom. The public sector is going through the stratosphere,” said Mr McKellar.

Speaking to Tom Connell on Sky News Australia this afternoon, ACCI CEO Andrew McKellar said that from a business point of view the government's Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook indicates there is a structural deficit back in place. "If we're going to get out of that we need an agenda for growth, we need to really see the private sector taking over more of the strain and freeing up the burden to see growth and productivity going," said Mr McKellar Watch the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/gSPba46x

The latest ACCI-Westpac Industrial Trends Survey has found that the manufacturing sector lost momentum at the end of this year but expect some pick up into the new year. Westpac economist Ryan Wells said that while manufacturers were able to find some pockets of demand through mid-year, that support looks to have dried up as the year drew to a close. Speaking to media at Parliament House this morning, ACCI CEO Andrew McKellar said that the survey results are consistent with the broader economic figures of anaemic economic growth and falling productivity. “With just a fifth of manufacturers able to increase prices to offset increased costs, the cost of doing business continues to rise for Australian businesses," said Mr McKellar.
