About us
The Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC) is one of two local councils found in the Torres Strait. The Torres Strait Islands are distributed across an area of some 48,000km² with TSIRC representing the fifteen ‘outer’ island communities of Badu, Boigu, Dauan, Erub (Darnley Island), Kirriri (Hammond Island), Iama (Yam Island), Kubin Community at Moa (Banks Island), Mabuiag, Masig (Yorke Island), Mer (Murray Island), Poruma (Coconut Island), Saibai, St Pauls Community at Moa (Banks Island), Ugar (Stephen Island) and Warraber (Sue Island). Our strong commitment to social responsibility means that we provide more than just essential services to the 15 island communities but opportunities to support and enable our residents to maintain happy and healthy communities. TSIRC has a number of exciting projects happening including the Seawalls Project; one of few projects in the world, minimising the impact of climate change and empowering communities to strengthen their culture and plan for their future. Formed in 2008 as part of the State Government’s amalgamation policy, the TSIRC is an entirely new local council governed under the Local Government Act (Qld). Prior to this, each community had its own independent Island Council.

𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 Firstly, I’d like to acknowledge our heavenly father for his wisdom, knowledge and understanding, I’d also like to acknowledge all of the traditional owners across the length and breadth of the Torres strait, including our great country of Australia. Welcome to the season of Christmas – a season of giving, loving, joy and rejoicing. Christmas holds deep meaning for many people. While individuals may have their own unique traditions, beliefs and practices one common thread unites us all – Christmas is about family. No matter our cultural background, the celebration of family and togetherness is a universal aspect of this season. I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone, wherever you may be located across the outer Torres Strait, or anywhere in between, a wonderful, safe and happy Christmas period and a wonderful new year. It’s been a great year. 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗱𝗵𝗮𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗯, 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝗯𝘆

They presented their innovative solutions to some of the key challenges faced by Saibai Island, including: 🌊 Waste management ⚡ Energy solutions 💧 Water security and sanitation 📡 Telecommunications Our team was impressed by the creativity and practicality of the proposed solutions. It was a valuable experience to see how the next generation of engineers is addressing real-world problems. 💡🙌 Thank you to EWB and their partners for organising such a meaningful event and for inviting TSIRC to be a part of it! 🌟 #TSIRC #EWBAustralia #ewbchallenge #ewbshowcase2024 #connectingchangemakers24 #Sustainability #Innovation #TorresStrait

𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 Today, we honour the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of all those who have served, including our Australian, Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal troops. These brave men and women answered the call to defend our freedoms, enduring hardship and separation from loved ones to protect our nation and its values. We pay special tribute to the unique contributions of Torres Strait Islander servicemen and women, whose legacy of loyalty, skill, and bravery is a source of pride and inspiration. From the early days of service to present-day operations, their dedication has been unwavering, and their impact immeasurable. Today, as we pause to reflect, we hold in our hearts the memory of those who paid the ultimate price and offer our deepest gratitude to all veterans and current service members. Your courage is not forgotten; your legacy lives on in the peace and freedoms we cherish today. Lest We Forget.

📊 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆! 🌏 We’re excited to embark on a deep dive into the essential assets that keep our communities thriving—from water services, transport, and marine infrastructure to social housing, recreation facilities, and corporate buildings. This extensive project spanned 13 days across 15 communities, including Cairns and Thursday Island, marking a pivotal moment for Australian local governments in understanding and managing our essential resources. Our Finance Project Team, along with external valuers and divisional teams, has worked closely with residents and local stakeholders to gain vital infrastructure knowledge for each community. By combining quantitative data with firsthand insights, we’re laying the foundation for improved services and governance. 💬 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁? Over the coming months, we’ll be holding workshops to review and validate our findings. This process will ensure the highest standards of accuracy before finalising and auditing the data. The updated information will guide future decisions and shape our council’s financial outlook. Stay tuned for more updates as we work toward a stronger, more sustainable future! If you have any questions or want to get involved, let us know! #LocalGovernment #CommunityValuation #AssetManagement #SustainableFuture"
