Ranette Wosomo and other TSIRC Councillors joined Newly appointed Torres Strait Regional Authority Chairperson - George Nona, TSRA CEO - Charlie Kaddy, TJ Oberleuter - Treaty Liaison Officer, Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Kabai Salee - Co-Chair of the Traditional Inhabitants, to mark this historic milestone. With inspiring speeches, all reflecting on the deep connection between the Torres Strait and PNG, one that goes beyond borders, from our ancestors to our families today. The treaty, signed in 1978 and enacted in 1985, continues to protect our traditional way of life, trade, and cultural ties. A strong reminder that our communities have always been connected. 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟰𝟬 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘆 – 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗶 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 We’re excited to announce a special event on 𝟭𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗮𝘁 𝟭𝟬𝗮𝗺 as we commemorate 𝟰𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘆 entered into enforcement. This milestone event will take place on 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗶 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 and promises a day of cultural celebration and reflection. The celebration will feature vibrant performances by 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗶’𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝘆𝗻𝗴𝘂 𝗞𝗼𝗲𝗸𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺, alongside dancers and entertainers from neighbouring islands and treaty villages. 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 Firstly, I’d like to acknowledge our heavenly father for his wisdom, knowledge and understanding, I’d also like to acknowledge all of the traditional owners across the length and breadth of the Torres strait, including our great country of Australia. Welcome to the season of Christmas – a season of giving, loving, joy and rejoicing. Christmas holds deep meaning for many people. While individuals may have their own unique traditions, beliefs and practices one common thread unites us all – Christmas is about family. No matter our cultural background, the celebration of family and togetherness is a universal aspect of this season. I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone, wherever you may be located across the outer Torres Strait, or anywhere in between, a wonderful, safe and happy Christmas period and a wonderful new year. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗭𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗱𝘁𝗵 𝗞𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 has been successfully completed and officially endorsed by Council this month. 𝗧𝗦𝗜𝗥𝗖 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 (𝗘𝗪𝗕) 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 Last week, TSIRC’s Operations Supervisor and Waste & Sustainability Engineer had the opportunity to travel to Sydney and serve as judges at the EWB Showcase Event. 🎓🌍 The event brought together a group of talented engineering students from across Australia and New Zealand, all selected from over 10,000 participants. They presented their innovative solutions to some of the key challenges faced by Saibai Island, including: 🌊 Waste management ⚡ Energy solutions 💧 Water security and sanitation 📡 Telecommunications Our team was impressed by the creativity and practicality of the proposed solutions. From the early days of service to present-day operations, their dedication has been unwavering, and their impact immeasurable. Today, as we pause to reflect, we hold in our hearts the memory of those who paid the ultimate price and offer our deepest gratitude to all veterans and current service members. This extensive project spanned 13 days across 15 communities, including Cairns and Thursday Island, marking a pivotal moment for Australian local governments in understanding and managing our essential resources. Our Finance Project Team, along with external valuers and divisional teams, has worked closely with residents and local stakeholders to gain vital infrastructure knowledge for each community. By combining quantitative data with firsthand insights, we’re laying the foundation for improved services and governance. 💬 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁?
