Katherine "Kat" Cardy works in the Triple Zero Victoria Burwood Ambulance team. She's recently been awarded the IAED 2024 Australasia Dispatcher of the Year. Part of Kat's successful nomination included a 000 call of the birth of twin baby girls. Ambulance Call-Takers like Kat play a crucial role when they get a call involving a baby's birth; these calls are highly complex, can last a long time and the Call-Taker stays on the line while help is on its way. Call-Takers are highly skilled and trained to deal with these stressful circumstances, Katherine's call lasted 20 minutes and the two babies were successfully delivered before being transported to the Royal Children's Hospital. When 84-year-old Ralph collapsed while gardening a few months ago, his daughter Gina immediately called Triple Zero (000). On the other end of the phone, Ambulance call taker Karah guided Gina through life-saving CPR, providing calm and clear instructions to help Gina keep Ralph alive until a crew from Fire Rescue Victoria was able to take over, with Ambulance Victoria paramedics arriving soon after to assist. Ralph was transported to hospital and has since made an incredible recovery. Recently, he and Gina met with the emergency services responders who each played a part in saving his life, including call taker Karah. During the reunion Gina listened to her Triple Zero call for the first time and was praised by Karah for her efforts in persisting with CPR for several minutes, providing the vital support Ralph needed before help arrived. What a fantastic team effort! https://lnkd.in/gsY7nhNd

Every day around 20 Victorians will have a cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, only one in 10 survive. Bystander intervention has the greatest impact on improving survival rates - when a patient receives CPR and a shock from an AED before the arrival of paramedics, their chance of survival more than doubles. This #shocktober, Ambulance Victoria is encouraging all Victorians to take action: ❤️ Learn how to perform CPR ❤️ Learn how to use an AED ❤️ Sign up to become a GoodSAM responder These simple actions have the power to save a life. Like 16-year-old Kip, who began giving his father CPR after a recent cardiac arrest, performing life-saving compressions until paramedics arrived. Mark has since made a full recovery, thanks to the efforts of his son and caller Kendyn. Triple Zero Victoria call-taker Lauren recently reunited with the family, and said meeting Mark, his son Kip and caller Kendyn was something she would cherish forever. “Putting faces to the voices on the other end of the Triple Zero line is an incredible experience, and I am so proud of Kip for his quick thinking to immediately call 000, when he knew his dad Mark needed urgent help.” “In what would have been one of the worst days for him, Kip calmly followed my instructions for CPR which gave his dad the best chance of survival.” Read the whole story here https://bit.ly/3TMP8qY

Miles was just 7 years old when he found his Mum Stephanie unconscious and lying on the floor. Fortunately, Stephanie had taught Miles what to do if he ever needed to call for help in an emergency. Miles dialed ‘000’ and was quickly connected with Ambulance Call-Taker Jessica. Although a frightening situation, Miles calmly answered all of Jessica's questions and followed her instructions, including turning his Mum onto her side, monitoring her breathing and opening the front door for the paramedics. Jessica nominated Miles for a Junior Triple Zero Hero award for being so brave and calm while waiting on the phone with her until help arrived. Since receiving his award, Miles has also appeared as a special guest on Chanel 7’s Sunrise program. During his interview, Miles had some great advice for other kids who may need to call for help during an emergency, “Don’t be scared to call Triple Zero and make sure you know what your address is”. See more of Miles’ interview with Sunrise: https://bit.ly/3Xwq5JI Great work Call-Taker Jessica and Junior Triple Zero Hero Miles!

Ask R U OK? AnyDay because life happens every day. Checking in regularly and having meaningful conversations is important to normalise talking about what is really going on in someone’s world. That way when people find themselves struggling, they know you’re someone they can talk too. People working in emergency services often face unique challenges in the job and report suicidal thoughts more than twice as often as the general population. Having support and regular conversations makes a difference when people know they are cared for, and that support is available. Regardless of whether you work in the emergency services, a conversation could save a life. R U OK? AnyDay is an important reminder to check in regularly with those around us. Any day is a good day to ask "R U OK"? For tips on how to start the conversation go to www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

It’s been a busy month for Junior Triple Zero Hero Grace! Grace was nominated for an award after she dialed 000 for help when her Mum fainted in the kitchen, hit her head, and fell unconscious. Carefully following her Call Taker’s instructions, this brave seven-year-old checked her Mum’s breathing, put the dog away, and used a towel to control the bleeding. Our Call Taker stayed on the line with Grace and her two-year-old brother until the Paramedics arrived. Since receiving her medal, Grace has visited Parliament House to share her story with Premier Jacinta Allan. She has also met Nick Staikos MP, who described Grace as a “real life super hero”. Way to go, Grace!
