Today, the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) alongside 26 development, humanitarian and affiliated agencies have sent an open letter to Australian Parliamentarians seeking urgent leadership to ensure the future and security of UNRWA. “Australia has a long history of supporting UNRWA, and it is essential that we continue to champion its work. We urge the Australian Parliament to unite at this critical moment and act to ensure UNRWA’s survival,” said Naomi Brooks, ACFID's Humanitarian and Public Engagement Lead. INDONESIA: Massive union win! Thousands of workers, led by trade unions like KSPI, KSBSI, and KSPSI, have mobilised for years, demanding changes to Indonesia’s Job Creation (Omnibus) Law, which undermines workers’ rights and weakens labour protections. The Constitutional Court has now ruled the law as 'conditionally unconstitutional,' requiring the government to draft a separate Employment Law. The Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) sent a message to Union Aid Abroad–APHEDA: 'We extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and solidarity throughout this journey. It has been invaluable in our fight for workers' rights,' said Prihanani from the Federation of Indonesian Metalworkers Union (FSPMI). Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA strongly condemns the decision of the Israeli government to ban the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from providing critical, life-saving humanitarian assistance in Gaza and the West Bank. This decision demands strong opposition from the international community, along with all steps taken to have Israel reverse the decision. In keeping with ACTU statement of the 22nd of April 2024, we reiterate the calls for the Australian government to end military trade with Israel and impose targeted sanctions on officials denying aid, to press for a reversal of this decision’s horrifying implications. The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), the peak body for humanitarian agencies, urges the Australian Government to assert accountability and apply autonomous sanctions on Israeli officials engaged in killing civilians, consistent with the approach it has taken towards other combatants committing war crimes. “Engaging in siege tactics of civilians, sealing people off from humanitarian assistance and causing further starvation are all illegal under the Geneva Conventions.” said Marc Purcell, ACFID’s Chief Executive Officer.

This year we celebrate our 40th anniversary, four decades of Australian unionists coming together to build something greater than themselves, driven by a deep sense of solidarity. We are proud to have a strong trade union movement capable of creating an international humanitarian organisation like Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA. Through international solidarity, we have stood alongside workers and communities in key struggles for democracy and justice across the globe. Our impact is often larger than we realise. Nelson Mandela once said about our work: “This is the true meaning of solidarity.” Join us to celebrate this tremendous pride at our 40th anniversary dinner. The Cambodian campaign to ban asbestos has achieved a major milestone! Following last year’s announcement from the Ministry of Labour that Cambodia would ban asbestos use by 2025, the Deputy Prime Minister has now announced collaboration with the Australian Government to fully ban asbestos in the construction sector. 🌏 Why is this important? Many neighbouring Southeast Asian countries still use asbestos-containing construction materials due to their seemingly low cost, not accounting for future health, environmental, and cleanup costs, along with human suffering. Meanwhile, the asbestos industry spreads misinformation claiming that white asbestos is safe. Cambodia’s commitment to a total ban will set a powerful example and help eradicate this dangerous "killer dust" across the entire region. Asbestos. Not here. Not anywhere.
