The UTS School of Sport, Exercise & Rehabilitation congratulates Dr Oscar Lederman and collaborators who have recently been awarded the Maridulu Budyari Gumal - Sydney Partnership for Health, Education, Research and Enterprise (SPHERE) - Building ‘Big Ideas’ Health Services Research Grant for their project 'Community in Motion: Preventing health disparities through a physical activity and wellbeing program for adults with complex mental health issues'. Exciting new Postdoctoral Research positions available now here at the UTS School of Sport, Exercise & Rehabilitation and Edith Cowan University in collaboration with the Australian Institute Of Sport!
The University of Technology Sydney, Edith Cowan University, and the Australian Institute of Sport have combined resources for an exciting joint project to create an online, open-access Evidence Gap Map in women's sports research. This state-of-the-art project aims to identify research gaps, provide an accurate assessment of the risk of bias and other critical methodological issues, offer recommendations, and inform future priority areas for investigation. ✨ Why this matters: • 📈 Improving research quality for women in sport: Improving outcomes through robust and meaningful studies. • ♻️ Reducing research waste: Ensuring studies are purposeful and use resources effectively. • 🌍 Open science principles and democratising information: Supporting transparency, collaboration, and broader access to research findings. New research published on the influence of heat in football from Edgar Schwarz's collaborative PhD with University of Technology Sydney and Universität des Saarlandes. In the first of several upcoming publications, Edgar and colleagues report that total match distances and high-speed activities were reduced with increasing temperatures using data from multiple professional football leagues. New research from the UTS School of Sport, Exercise & Rehabilitation on Men's Mental Health Promotion by Paul Sharp, Cristina Caperchione, and colleagues.
🚨 New publication! 🚨 Using interpretive description methodology, this qualitative study explored Australian-based men’s preferences for language and communication when engaging with mental health promotion efforts and/or initiatives! Generating three salient themes, it was discovered that: ✅ Using coded language was important for men when communicating mental health issues and emotions. Relatedly, men preferred mental health programs and initiatives to be framed around their lives, rather than solely referencing their mental [ill] health. ✅ The use of association and metaphors with familiar topics also provided relatable language for men to talk and operationalize their own issues related to their mental health. ✅ Men had a strong preference for action-oriented approaches, with emphasis placed on identifying and building upon what spoke to them in their every day lives. Men specifically idealized such approaches as purposeful and strategic. UTS was pleased to host the Minister for Education, India – the Hon. Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, the High Commissioner to Australia – his Excellency Mr Gopal Baglay and distinguished guests on Friday 25th October. Hosted by Kylie Readman, Debra Anderson and Prabhu Sivabalan, the visit was held at our state-of-the-art Moore Park campus where an overview of our sports and exercise program was provided by Prof. Aaron Coutts and colleagues (Mark Watsford, Blake McLean, Patrick Farhart). Moore Park is a unique teaching and research facility focused on sport and exercise and this model has produced the following outcomes: • Embedded PhD students funded by industry (both in Australia and globally). • High performance sport and exercise practitioners working in Australian and international teams. • Partnerships with elite national teams. • Partnerships with government. Thank you to the Department of Education Karen Sandercock for facilitating the campus tour on behalf of Jason Clare MP.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Nicolas Hart, Director of the School’s Master of Clincial Exercise Physiology course, on being recognised as a leading scientist globally for his work in Cancer Care (Oncology, Carcinogenesis) and Sport Sciences. A well-deserved achievement for Nicolas, who is currently undertaking several high-impact projects in this field to advance our understanding of cancer treatment and survivorship.

Pleased to have finally made it to the ‘Worlds Top 2% Scientists’ list curated by Stanford University and Elsevier in the overall field of Clinical Medicine, sub-fields of Oncology and Carcinogenesis as well as Sports Science. A humbling achievement that I owe to my mentors Robert Newton and Raymond Chan over many (many) years.
