Nice work GESSS WA - a great day filled with diverse talks and discussions on everything #earthscience! 🌏 The students presenting at this year's GESSS WA conference have shown that study, research and career possibilities as a geoscientist are as vast and dynamic as the Earth itself. There’s a niche for every curiosity in this multifaceted field! From the mantle to groundwater, fossils and biomarkers, geoarchaeology, zircon geochronology, ore deposits, gold, geochemistry, structural geology, microscale rock textures, early Earth, and climate proxies... postgraduate and honours students from UWA Earth Sciences, Curtin University and the Western Australian Museum have been showcasing their latest research. Great work by all 👏 Congrats to GESSS WA on organising an excellent student-led conference. Celebrating the Launch of the ARC Centre in Critical Resources for the Future   ARC Centre in Critical Resources for the Future was launched today. Under the leadership of Prof. Marco Fiorentini, Director of the Centre, this Centre marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind in Australia. It brings together a coalition of research leaders from prestigious institutions, including The University of Western Australia. The Australian National University, The University of Queensland and University of Adelaide. This collaborative approach enhances research capabilities and fosters a diverse educational environment that is essential for driving transformative change in sustainable mining practices. Highlights from the Launch Event The launch event was hosted by Prof Annette George at the University Club of Western Australia and featured a robust agenda filled with insightful discussions and addresses from key figures in the resources sector: The event commenced with an Acknowledgement of Country performed by the Moorditj Mob from Wesley College, Perth. The Moorditj Mob program celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The students performed three traditional dances while sharing the significance and history behind each performance, emphasising our commitment to respecting and honouring the traditional custodians of the land. Keynote Addresses: The audience was inspired by keynote addresses from Hon. Madeleine King, Federal Minister for Resources, and Hon. David Michael State Minister for Mines and Petroleum. Their insights underscored the importance of the Centre's mission in advancing Australia's critical resources sector. Panel Discussion: A panel featuring experts from UWA, BHP, Chalice Mining Limited, CSIRO, and Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA) engaged in a dynamic discussion on the evolving landscape of geoscience education and training. They explored how to prepare future professionals better to meet global challenges. Formal Launch: Australian Research Council Nigel Keough’s formal launch was met with enthusiasm and marked a significant milestone in the Centre's journey toward making a meaningful impact in the field. UWA VC, Prof Amit Chakma closed the event by challenging all participants to 'Dream Big' and 'Start Small". The Centre aims to catalyse transformational change in sustainable mining, positioning Australia at the forefront of a greener global critical resource industry. The launch of the ARC Centre in Critical Resources for the Future is a significant step forward in addressing the challenges of our time through innovative education and collaborative research. This pivotal moment for the critical minerals sector and the future of geoscience in Australia marks the beginning of a journey filled with potential and promise. We’re thrilled to share that the Woolnough Society’s Mineral Auction raised over $4000 for the Edward de Courcy Clarke Earth Science Museum! 🎉 With over 200 unique mineral samples auctioned, we hope everyone is happy with their purchases and new additions to their collections. The night concluded with an exciting live auction featuring six incredible mineral samples.
