The Victorian Bar is a private, voluntary, self-funded, non-profit professional association of barristers who practise in Victoria. Barristers connected to the Victorian Bar’s LinkedIn company profile are independent self-employed members of the Victorian Bar. The work of the barrister is built on the proud tradition of providing strong and independent legal representation and advice without fear or favour to all in the community. Since 1891, Victoria has had a fused or amalgamated legal profession. That is, there has been a single admission to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria. The terminology changed with the Legal Profession Act 2004 (Vic) to admission as an “Australian lawyer” and licensing to practise as an “Australian legal practitioner” and “local legal practitioner”. "Barrister” is defined in the Legal Profession Act 2004 (Vic) as “an Australian legal practitioner who engages in legal practice solely as a barrister”.

Our 2025 New Barristers’ Conference (for barristers up to six years’ call) was a resounding success in the Neil McPhee Room today. It started with a warm address by the Honourable Chief Justice Richard Niall of the Supreme Court of Victoria in his first public engagement since becoming Victoria’s 13th Chief Justice. His Honour, who signed the Bar Roll in 1995, emphasised the importance of seizing opportunities, constantly learning and observing others, and the value of building solid relationships, inside and outside work. We are also grateful to the Honourable Justice Jim Delany, the Honourable Associate Justice Catherine Gobbo and Judicial Registrar Claire Gitsham, who presented an insightful final session on what to do (and not to do) when appearing in the Commercial Court, and the many other presenters and panellists in between who volunteered their time to deliver informative and engaging sessions throughout the day. It was an excellent turnout for the official opening of the new Victorian Bar Mediation Centre. Around 100 mediators, law firm representatives, court staff and clerks helped the Bar usher in this new era for mediation and dispute resolution. Thank you to Victorian Bar President Justin Hannebery KC and Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee Chair Michael Whitten KC for launching the new centre at Castan Chambers. We are very proud of our new facilities and the event was a great opportunity to showcase the modern and spacious rooms in this premium location.
