🛥️ Head on board with the #seaworldfoundation rescue team as they free a humpback whale calf which had become entangled in the shark control netting off Bilinga Beach. 🐋 After receiving the initial report, the experienced team travelled south to Bilinga where they located the 6-metre calf which was slightly entangled with netting on its tubercles with mum nearby, unimpacted by the netting. 🐋 The complex operation was completed within 30minutes with the team freeing the calf from the netting using specialised cutting knives, before watching mum and calf continue their migration. ✅ We will continue to work with the authoritative agencies to research improved methods which will lessen the impact on marine life, such as drone surveillance, however in the meantime remain available to assist in rescue operations of animals which become entangled and can be contacted on 07 5588 2222 (9am – 5pm) or 07 5588 2177 (after hours).

🌊 Take to the seas and the skies with the #seaworldfoundation as they conduct their sixth whale rescue operation of the 2024 migration season to free an 8-metre humpback whale entangled in rope off North Stradbroke Island. 🚁 In a complex rescue operation, Sea World Helicopters provided vital aerial support to locate the whale and relay invaluable insight into the type of entanglement to prepare the rescue crew on the boat, following the initial reports from the member of public. 🐋 After following the coordinates supplied by the #seaworldhelicopters team, the crew on the boat located the whale 5 nautical miles off the coast off North Stradbroke Island and commenced the operation to remove the rope which was loosely entangled around the tail. The team connected their large buoys to the trailing rope with the friction of this extra weight managing to free the tail entanglement, however there was rope remaining in the whale’s mouth. 🌊 As the operation progressed further into the afternoon, the team reconnected another buoy with a satellite tracker which would allow them to continue the operation the following day should they lose light, however the extra weight of the buoy and tracker put the whale in a position which allowed the team to remove the remaining rope slowly and carefully from the whale’s mouth. 🐋 The team conducted a full assessment ensuring the whale had no further entanglement before leaving it to continue its northern migration.

It has been a busy start to the season for the #seaworldfoundation rescue team who earlier this week conducted their fourth whale disentanglement operation. 🐋 Head on board with the team as they perform the daring operation to assist a humpback whale which was heavily entangled in rope off Burleigh Heads. 🐋 Sadly, the eight-metre humpback whale was in a compromised condition, heavily entangled in rope and covered in sea lice with significant skin lesions. 🐋 The disentanglement effort was made difficult due to how tightly the rope was entangled around the whale’s tail, however the team managed to successfully grapple to the rope and use the force of the boat to remove a large section of trailing rope, however, were unable to remove the tight section of rope which was deeply embedded into the skin. 🐋 This is the fourth whale rescue operation the team have conducted this migration season due to commercial fishing equipment, so we encourage operators to manage their gear properly and report any missing equipment to the relevant authorities so we can be prepared to assist.

Join the #seaworldfoundation team as they partner with Queensland National Parks Rangers to successfully refloat a 10-metre humpback whale following a mammoth two-day operation off the coast of Hervey Bay.   🐋 The humpback whale stranded on the Dayman spit sandbank in the Great Sandy Marine Park on Sunday afternoon, and QPWS Rangers assessed the whale finding it to be in good condition but unable to free itself from the sand.   🐋 Over the next two days, QPWS and Sea World crews continued to assess the animal and provide first-aid with the hopes the whale would free itself once the water was deep enough.   🐋 With the whale not freeing itself overnight, a plan was implemented to refloat the whale using specialised towing equipment including slings on the high tide on Tuesday afternoon. These plans were altered after a sighting of 3-metre tiger shark, with the teams now working from the boats to deploy the slings, with this activity seemingly encouraging the whale to gather enough momentum to move off the sandbank into deeper waters.   🐋 These rescue operations are logistically challenging, and between our team and the QPWS rangers we had four vessels working around the whale with a team of 20 using specialised equipment and it was fantastic to see this animal swim off to continue its migration.   🐋 Whale rescue operations are extremely dangerous and should only be undertaken by trained professionals, so we encourage anyone who may come across a whale in distress to call our dedicated team who are on standby to assist any animal in need and can be contacted are on 07 5588 2222 (9am - 5pm) or 06 5588 2177 (after hours). #conservation #protect #rescue #educate #vrtp #foundation #support #queensland   🎥: Drone vision courtesy of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services. #

🐋 Strap in and head on board with the #seaworldfoundation rescue team as they conducted their third, and most complicated whale disentanglement operation of the migration season to save a humpback which was anchored in trawler wire off Iluka, Northern NSW. 🐋 The eight-metre humpback was reported to Sea World Foundation by ORRCA on Wednesday 3 July after being stationary for a longer period than usual, so the team developed a plan to travel to Iluka to attempt the rescue operation the following morning. Despite poor weather conditions including 3.5metre swells and winds of up to 35 knots, the highly trained team commenced the operation to free the whale on Thursday 4 July, using specialised cutting knives and grappling tools, however after spending four hours with the whale and not managing to cut the entanglement despite engaging with it on multiple occasions and with the weather deteriorating further, the operation was postponed. 🐋 Once back on shore, the team reviewed the underwater footage, and identified the entanglement was not rope, but 20mm thick trawler wire which is uncuttable with normal cutting knives. After careful consideration and collaboration with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service a plan was developed to send divers into the water to use underwater tools to cut the wire from the whale to free it from being anchored. On Saturday morning, the rescue team successfully completed the dive operation to cut the wire 50cms from the whale’s tail allowing it to swim away and continue its northern migration with a small amount of wire remaining on its tail. 🎥 Drone vision courtesy of Sharyn Coffee from ORRCA.
