About us
The St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia (Vinnies) has more than 45,000 members and volunteers, who provide practical frontline support, advocacy and friendship for the most vulnerable members of our community. More than 13 percent of the Australian population are living in poverty, 1.5 million people are unemployed or underemployed, the bottom fifth of households receive only 2.5 percent of wages, and a quarter of Australians live with a long-term health condition or disability. Under our country’s prosperous veneer, there is a significant group of people struggling to survive. The St Vincent de Paul Society is deeply committed to assisting people in need and reaches out to millions of Australians every year through a range of services including home visitation; volunteer-run shops; youth programs; soup vans; assistance for asylum seekers and refugees; compeer programs for people experiencing mental illness; education and tutoring; accommodation services; and health services. The St Vincent de Paul Society welcomes an opportunity to work closely with all members of our community – visit www.vinnies.org.au to get involved.

For Margaret from Victoria, volunteering runs in the family. "When I was a teenager - some 40 years ago - I used to keep my dad company as he delivered food parcels or money to the Vinnies 'customers' (as he used to call them!). I lost my job 2 years ago, and I felt lost,” she said. "I didn't know what to do with my time and I couldn't find another job. Then my husband suggested volunteering in an op shop!.” -- Margaret was browsing for some hidden op-shop treasures at Vinnies Epping one day when she heard that a new store had opened in South Morang and they needed staff. “I went to the store, and it just felt right. I know that dad would be proud to know that one of his kids is now working at Vinnies.” -- You can join the community of service-minded people behind the #GoodWorks of St Vincent de Paul Society around Australia here: https://lnkd.in/g2Cj7Ddw

Meet Wilma. Wilma first started volunteering at Vinnies Grovedale 15 months ago. Working twice a week, Wilma thinks that volunteering provides a great opportunity for people to get out and meet new people. “It’s a huge thing being able to interact with others. I grew up with parents who volunteered at Vinnies”. Wilma’s dad also delivered food packages to local families in need and her mum, now in her 80’s, still volunteers one day a week at Vinnies South Geelong. -- Wilma says that the best thing about working in the store is the friendships she has made “I’ve teamed up with one of the other volunteers and together we’re going overseas to volunteer at orphanages in Africa. I would never have done that before I met her and came here.” -- You can make a real difference by volunteering with us. There are a range of ways you can donate your time locally to help those in need: https://lnkd.in/ghgjBfZ3

National Council of St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia and its National Council Secretariate greatly appreciate the many good works done in the past year by our Members, volunteers and employees throughout the country. We thank you for the support and service you gave to those Companions we have assisted in their time of need. For a snapshot of the Society's work in the last financial year, I encourage you to look at the National Overview 2023-24. -- As we approach Christmas, it is timely to reflect on the principles that inspire and guide us in both our work and our daily lives. 2024 has been a year of immense challenge, both in Australia as well as internationally and I urge you to join Pope Francis in praying for peace and an end to suffering as we move towards one of the holiest days in the Christian calendar. -- This year, National Council provided significant input to Government social policy reviews being undertaken by parliamentary committees and I believe this work has made a tangible contribution towards creating a Fairer Australia. -- I am immensely proud of the dedication and achievements of our 35,000 Members and volunteers and take this opportunity to thank you for your commitment. I wish you a happy, holy and healthy Christmas, and a good start to New Year 2025. Mark Gaetani National President https://lnkd.in/ggJsthuH

St Vincent de Paul Society helps with people’s immediate needs and, in the spirit of our founders, speaks out against inequality and injustice. The Society advocates for policy reforms leading to a more just, compassionate and equitable society, with the aim of eliminating the root causes of poverty. -- We provide emergency assistance and build trusting relationships with people we assist. This trust helps us to address the causes of disadvantage in order to offer a hand up to people in need. The Society engages with government and works with like-minded organisations to raise awareness across the community. -- This Christmas, think about people who are less fortunate and what can you do to help them. Every bit of help matters: https://lnkd.in/gvp4uiiq
