About us

The St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia (Vinnies) has more than 45,000 members and volunteers, who provide practical frontline support, advocacy and friendship for the most vulnerable members of our community. More than 13 percent of the Australian population are living in poverty, 1.5 million people are unemployed or underemployed, the bottom fifth of households receive only 2.5 percent of wages, and a quarter of Australians live with a long-term health condition or disability. Under our country’s prosperous veneer, there is a significant group of people struggling to survive. The St Vincent de Paul Society is deeply committed to assisting people in need and reaches out to millions of Australians every year through a range of services including home visitation; volunteer-run shops; youth programs; soup vans; assistance for asylum seekers and refugees; compeer programs for people experiencing mental illness; education and tutoring; accommodation services; and health services. The St Vincent de Paul Society welcomes an opportunity to work closely with all members of our community – visit www.vinnies.org.au to get involved.

  • Housing is the answer to homelessness. Every day we see the human face of housing stress and homelessness behind the statistics. Being homeless or facing housing stress is a denial of dignity and limits people’s life potential.   — We help people by providing housing and accommodation options in each state and territory. We advocate with government for improved housing accessibility. Policies that improve housing affordability, security, safety and energy efficiency have been neglected for too long. — Affordable and safe housing for Australians is sure to be a major factor in the upcoming Federal Election. Ask where your local candidates stand on this key issue.

  • The issue of rental affordability cuts right across the community, with many renters of all ages and circumstances facing high costs and a lack of available rental properties. -- 30% of low-income households, or 2.65 million people, are now in the private rental market, with two- thirds of them experiencing rental stress. Some 170,000 households are surviving on less than $250 per week after paying rent. Housing affordability and social housing are key issues for candidates in Federal Election 2025. vinnies.link/housing

  • You deserve to spend your golden years in security and comfort. But too many retirees are facing poverty because of the high cost of renting. A new study by the Grattan Institute exposes the reality that 2 out of 3 retirees renting in the private market in Australia live below the poverty line. -- Behind this statistic lie thousands of lives, including your neighbours, friends or family members. ‘St Vincent de Paul Society shares the concerns expressed by the Grattan Institute about retirees who rent being left behind,’ said the Society’s National President, Mark Gaetani. -- The Society is calling for an urgent review of Commonwealth Rent Assistance, which should include all current recipients as well as low-income households who are currently not eligible. #HelpOurRetirees #RentAssistance #CompassionForAll #Auspol2025 #Auspol

  • The stark reality of living on JobSeeker support in our major centres is that the cost of renting far exceeds what the payment provides. Even living regionally is no answer. Researchers agree renting on JobSeeker is unaffordable. This highlights the urgent need for policy reform to ensure everyone has access to basic housing. Let's keep this conversation going and push for change with likes and shares. Thank you! #HousingAffordability #JobSeeker #PolicyReform

  • In a world that often feels divided, Rosalie Rendu's story reminds us of the unifying power of love and service. Her life teaches us that no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Today, Rosalie Rendu’s Feast Day, let's take a moment to reflect on how we can embody her spirit of selfless service in our daily lives. -- Our Members, volunteers, and staff are committed to offering love and compassion before any material or financial support.  Together, as a network of charity, we are able to keep living out this wisdom and making a difference, one act of kindness at a time. -- Join us in honoring Rosalie Rendu by doing acts of kindness every day and become part of our Good Works team in your community: https://lnkd.in/ghgjBfZ3 #Nonprofit #Catholic #Charity #BlessedRosalieRendu

  • The Society, along with Catholic Social Services Australia and other community groups and crossbench Federal MPs, are advocating for a desperately needed increase in income support payments. Right now, those on JobSeeker are struggling to survive on just $56 a day, with young people expected to survive on just $47 a day with Youth Allowance. -- The Society hears the voices of those we assist and continues to advocate for a rate rise. This isn't just about numbers - it's about human dignity. -- This urgent call for change is about ensuring people can afford essentials like rent, food, and healthcare without the constant stress of how to make ends meet. It's about recognising the basic human need for security and respect. Please like and share to support.

  • In Australia, heroism isn't just found on the sporting field or in the world of celebrity. Real heroes walk among us every day, their stories often untold by the media but deeply felt within their communities. 💙 Included are the women who've found the courage to escape abusive situations, seeking a safer tomorrow. The men who've risen above the challenges of a disadvantaged start in life, showing us, what determination truly means. And the parents, who, against all odds, sacrifice their own dreams to ensure their children's safety and future. 💛 Every day, the Society’s Members and Volunteers touch people’s lives. They offer not just shelter or food but hope, dignity, and a chance to rebuild. We thank every Member and Volunteer who provides an opportunity to restore strength where it's been sapped by life's harsh realities. Drop your THANK YOU 👍in the comments section 🥰
