Just a bit of a thought starter for the week...
Audio Production Specalist with 35yrs Experience
If you're recording voiceovers from a well-treated home studio with a great mic, guess what? You probably don’t need to mess around with compression. Unless the studio or client specifically requests it, there’s a good chance your natural sound is already top-notch. Before you slap on that compressor, ask yourself two questions: 1️⃣ Why am I doing this? – If it’s just to make it louder, that’s not a reason. Loudness isn’t what compression is for—it’s about controlling dynamics and tone. 2️⃣ Is it necessary? – Most engineers will prefer to handle compression themselves, tailoring it to fit the overall project. By adding your own, you could limit their flexibility. If your setup is dialled in (great mic + well-treated room), your raw recording should sound pretty darn good already. However, if you absolutely have to use compression, consider a transparent tool like the CLA-2A. Just remember: less is more. So next time you’re tempted to process, step back and trust in your setup.
