  • Emergencies can strike at any time and the impacts can be complex, long-term and often hidden. People with MS and their families and friends are often more vulnerable to the impacts of emergencies and disasters. Preparing an emergency plan can give you the confidence and reassurance that you are ready to act if the need arises. 📝1. Identify your strengths and support needs in everyday life. 📝2. Know your level of preparedness and learn about your disaster risk. 📝3. Make a plan for how you will manage your support needs in an emergency. 📝4. Communicate the plan with the people in your support network and address gaps through collaboration. • Alice, a woman defined by love, resilience, and a deep commitment to others, was born in Cowes, a small community on Phillip Island. Growing up during the Great Depression and World War II, she was shaped by a spirit of community and service that guided her throughout her life. In 1949, Alice married Jack Robinson, and together they raised three children. After moving to Melbourne, Alice became deeply involved in her local community, dedicating herself to church activities, school committees, and managing the school canteen. Despite facing personal hardships, including the early death of her husband in 1993 and the diagnosis of her son Stuart with multiple sclerosis, Alice continued to care for her family with quiet strength. With support from MS Plus, she was able to care for Stuart at home for many years before he was placed in a home away from home at MS Plus accommodation in Williamstown, Victoria. Alice passed away in 2019, but her legacy of service and generosity lives on through the gift she left in her Will to MS Plus, ensuring her kindness continues to help those affected by MS. A gift of any size will make a real difference. After consulting with family and friends, even 1% or 2% can make a difference. You can fund more brilliant research, and make sure services and support continue to give people with MS the best possible quality of life. It’s a powerful way that you can give the gift of more good days — and one day, a cure. Fast-track a cure for MS, Care until we’re there. Protect future generations from MS To learn how to support people with MS through a gift in your will, contact Laura on 1800 443 867, email futureplanning@ms.org.au, or visit www.mymslegacy.org.au. • Dr Alice Saul is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research at the University of Tasmania. Currently, her research is exploring the different types of pain experienced by people with MS. "Pain is a common and often debilitating symptom that greatly affects the quality of life for those living with MS." Dr Saul explains. "Despite its impact, MS-related pain is still not well understood. I wanted to focus on this area to explore better ways to manage pain and improve the lives of those affected by it." With a better understanding of the different types of pain in MS, Dr Saul's research could lead to more personalised treatment options that vastly improve quality of life for people living with MS. Your support can help uncover new and more targeted treatment options to take the pain of MS away. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gaBh5yvi
