Werner Film Productions, a subsidiary of BBC Studios, is an award winning film and television Production Company specializing in the creative development and production of high quality live action drama. Emmy Nominated, AFI and Logie award winning television producer Joanna Werner established Werner Film Productions in 2008 after many years producing live action children’s and teen drama series which have screened around the world. The company went on to be named the 2012 Australian Children’s Television Producer of the Year at the SPAA Independent Producer Awards and in 2013 was nominated for Children’s Producer of the Year as well as Australian Production Business of the Year. Werner Film Productions’ first series, the acclaimed teen drama Dance Academy, first screened in June 2010 in Australia and has gone on to be a global success. The series has been twice nominated at the International Emmy Awards in the category of Children’s and Youth. Dance Academy is currently screening in over 160 countries around the world including ZDF in Germany, Teen Nick in the US and Nickelodeon in the UK. Series one and two of Dance Academy both took out Logies for Most Outstanding Children’s Program, Gold Plaques at the Chicago Film Festival’s Hugo Television Awards, Bronze World Medals at the New York Festivals International Television & Film Awards, Kidscreen Awards for Best Companion Website and Australian Directors Guild Awards. Dance Academy has also won an ATOM Award, two AWGIE awards for Best Children’s Television Screenplay and was Highly Commended at the 2012 Asian Television Awards. The third series of Dance Academy premiered on ABC3 in Australia in 2013 and takes the total number of episodes to 65. We are thrilled to announce that BBC Studios Productions Australia has acquired @Werner Film Productions who specialise in the development and production of high quality, original drama series including The Newsreader for ABC, which was also broadcast on the BBC in the UK, and Surviving Summer for Netflix. The very talented Joanna Werner and Stuart Menzies will continue to lead the Melbourne-based business which will operate as an independent label alongside the local BBC Studios production business. Their passion and creativity has seen shows like the Newsreader and Surviving Summer enjoyed by audiences around the world and we are excited for what is to come. The deal marks a significant investment by BBC Studios Productions Australia in the local production industry and provides Werner Film Productions with the backing of one of the world’s biggest global distributors, as it continues to grow its production of drama series for Australian and global audiences.
