In an effort to continue supporting the needs of communities surrounding projects, the Community Relations Team at the Sanbrado Gold Mine, made donations valued over 59.4 million XOF (~$150,000 AUD) over the past 4 years, including: ✅ A grain mill for the Pilaka women’s group: This mill is an income-generating activity designed to benefit the women’s group in Pilaka. It enables them to earn income that can be reinvested into other local development activities. ✅ Support for training and tools in dyeing and soap-making for women’s associations: Training sessions have been conducted for four women’s associations in Nedogo and Boudry, equipping them with skills to strengthen their production. This initiative is helping them generate higher earnings and expand their activities, fostering sustainable income growth. ✅ Equipment kits for young professionals: Tools and equipment have been provided for youth and women in Nedogo and Boudry, supporting trades such as masonry, carpentry, electricity, welding, automobile mechanics, and income-generating activities. ✅ Furniture for communal spaces: These contributions to resettled communities aim to create more functional and welcoming community spaces. The donation ceremony was held in September and provided an opportunity to celebrate alongside the community of Pilaka, neighbouring villages, and the youth and women from communities impacted by our operations.

In recognition of World Soil Day held on 5th of December and the role soils play in sustaining healthy ecosystems and in carbon sequestration, we would like to shine a spotlight on the Erosion Control and Sustainable Soil Improvement Program run by the West African Resources Livelihood Restoration Team. Land degradation is a pressing challenge in Burkina Faso as in other parts of the world. In communities surrounding Sanbrado, this has resulted from climatic conditions, certain agricultural practices, and increasing human pressure. To help reverse this, WAF together with Burkinabe partner organisations, has developed a program focusing on reducing and preventing soil erosion while improving the quality of soils through sustainable methods. The program focuses on using augmenting traditional cultivation techniques with organic inputs and technologies readily available to the local communities. It also addresses the pressing challenge of land degradation in Burkina Faso and has significantly benefited the local communities impacted by the Sanbrado Gold Operation. Highlights include: 🌱 Training and Capacity Building – 225 agropastoralists have received training on erosion control, climate change adaptation, and sustainable soil practices. – A study trip to Nagréongo allowed local farmers to learn advanced soil restoration techniques. 🌱 Erosion Control Practices – Stone barriers have been built across 53.75 hectares to prevent soil erosion and improve water retention. – The Zaï technique, used on 5 hectares, helps retain water and nutrients, promoting soil fertility. 🌱 Land Reclamation and Restoration – Subsoiling of 54 hectares has restored soil permeability and structure, improving its capacity for agriculture. – Multi-species grass strips were planted on 7 hectares, and 4,122 trees have been introduced to enhance biodiversity and prevent further soil erosion. 🌱 Soil Enrichment – In 2022, over 30 tons of compost have been produced and distributed, enriching the soil’s organic matter and supporting long-term fertility. – Agroforestry practices like planting moringa trees alongside crops help improve soil health. This initiative has empowered more than 225 local producers to adopt sustainable farming practices, enhancing food security and strengthening resilience to environmental challenges. The Livelihood Restoration Team will be investigating viability of scaling up this and other programs aimed at improving local environmental conditions while providing reliable sources of livelihoods for communities. 🌍 #WorldSoilDay
