The Westport team got to work recently supporting the OzFish Unlimited 'Seeds for Snapper' program. The team helped prepare the seeds for their annual dispersal, including sifting, sorting, cleaning and counting the seeds, with guidance from OzFish’s Steve Pursell and other volunteers. The community-driven Seeds for Snapper is the largest #seagrass restoration program in Australia, working to restore Posidonia australis meadows in Cockburn Sound. Volunteers collect seagrass fruit, prepare and disperse seeds into pre-selected sites across Cockburn Sound and Owen Anchorage. Since it began, the program has dispersed more than four million seeds. As well as our staff #volunteering, Westport has provided $500,000 in funding to support Seeds for Snapper over the next 2 years, plus a further $130,000 to fund a trial of Ulysses Ecosystem Engineering Inc.'s robotic seagrass injection technology, which has the potential to significantly increase the planting and germination rate, by delivering seagrass pods directly into the sediment. In bringing together Seeds for Snapper, robotic seagrass technology, and the latest seagrass research from WAMSI, Westport is putting WA at the forefront of the global seagrass restoration effort. #seagrass #seagrassresearch #automation #CockburnSound

SEAGRASS ANNOUNCEMENT: Westport is putting WA at the forefront of global seagrass restoration efforts by investing $730,000, and bringing together a successful community-driven restoration program with pioneering robotic technology, underpinned by the latest independent seagrass science.   Westport provided $130,000 to fund an Australian-first trial of a robotic seagrass planter, developed by Ulysses Ecosystem Engineering Inc. and managed by The University of Western Australia. The robot was used in this year’s seagrass planting season to inject the seeds directly into the sediment, improving the rate of planting, and likelihood of germination, as compared to manual dispersal. Westport has also invested $500,000 into the OzFish Unlimited Seeds for Snapper program, the largest #seagrass restoration program in Australia, to support its activities to restore Posidonia australis meadows in Cockburn Sound and Owen Anchorage. These activities are being informed by the latest in seagrass research from WAMSI Westport Marine Science Program, which includes seagrass mapping, light and sediment tolerance thresholds and best practice methods for scaling-up seagrass restoration.   The funding is part of Westport’s long-term commitment to significantly scale-up seagrass restoration in Cockburn Sound, before and after development of the new container port facilities in Kwinana. https://lnkd.in/gN5CccMc #seagrassrestoration #science #automation #marinescience

📈 WA’s population is forecast to reach 3.6 million by 2036. But WA’s container trade is growing even faster.    To support this parallel growth, WA needs an efficient and resilient container port and supply chain.   So, the question isn’t if we need a new port, but rather when we will need it and where we will build it.   Earlier this week, WA Premier The Hon. Roger Cook MLA announced that the business case for Westport – WA’s new container port in Kwinana – has been finalised and that the WA Government has officially entered the final stages of planning (https://lnkd.in/gD7DZ73i)   The Westport Business Case Summary explains: * Why Westport? * Importance of container trade to WA * Issues facing Fremantle Port  * Finding the right location for the new port  * Developing the preferred design  * The preferred design  * Transition, timing and cost  * The commercial model  * Environmental management  * Future of Fremantle  * What’s next?    👉 Read the Business Case Summary here: https://lnkd.in/gDpuTnfp #port #supplychain #infrstructure #trade

  • Today, the WA Government officially entered final planning stages for Westport – WA’s new container port in Kwinana.    The Hon. Roger Cook MLA confirmed the Westport business case has been finalised and action is needed to avoid a potential $244 billion impact on WA’s economy due to future trade constraints.   Fremantle port is expected to reach capacity by 2040. With strong population growth driving an increase in container trade, our current supply chain will become constrained, placing upward pressure on costs and putting WA’s economic self-sufficiency at risk.    The new port and the supporting road and rail infrastructure is essential, once-in-a-century infrastructure that will support WA’s economic future.     Some key benefits of the new container port in Kwinana: ✅ Future-proofs WA’s trade capabilities ✅ Accommodates the larger, more efficient vessels expected to visit Perth in the 2030s ✅ Generates thousands of jobs during port construction and once operational ✅ Reduces road congestion by boosting the percentage of containers moved by rail ✅ Supports industry growth in the Kwinana Industrial Area and Western Trade Coast ✅ Provides value for money over extending the life of Fremantle Port ✅ Unlocks new urban opportunities by freeing up land for WA’s growing population   Westport will ensure our State is ready for the future.   👉 Read the media statement: https://lnkd.in/gD7DZ73i   👉 Read the Westport business case summary: https://lnkd.in/gDpuTnfp #trade #port #supplychain #infrastructure
