Secret recordings expose a potential deal between the newly appointed Fisheries Minister and PM Bjarni Benediktsson regarding #whaling policy. Does this not raise serious questions about transparency & governance in #Iceland's caretaker administration? With #whale hunting permits on the table, should a caretaker #government be able to act on such sensitive matters during such times? - We think not! 👉 https://ow.ly/mJrf50UeCNv

A world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free.
About us
WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation (formerly WDCS) is the leading global charity dedicated to the conservation and protection of whales and dolphins. We defend these remarkable creatures against the many threats they face through campaigns, lobbying, advising governments, conservation projects, field research and rescue. Our vision is a world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free. WDC is a passionate, global campaigner for whales and dolphins, speaking with emotion and wonder, but always with authority. We make sure our voice is heard by decision makers. We care about whales and dolphins and we want others to care about them too. WDC’s core belief is that all whales and dolphins have the right to exist as nature intends, not as humans decide. To be able to live free from hunting, captivity, entanglement in fishing gear and nets, and to swim in clean, noise-free waters where boats won't injure them.

Action for whales is climate action! WDC’s Ed Goodall has been giving our non-human allies a voice at #COP16 and #COP29, where nations were negotiating on #climate and #biodiversity plans. Whilst rich nations debated how little they were prepared to pay to help redress the #climate damage they’ve caused, it was our job to make sure that #wildlife and #nature are prioritised as part of the solution. Get Ed’s inside scoop 👉 https://ow.ly/HQAn50UgtYU

Breaking News: We are devastated to learn of #Keto, the orca's passing at 29 in #LoroParque, #Tenerife. This marks a troubling trend - four orcas have now died at the facility since 2021. Each death reaffirms that #captivity is no place for these magnificent beings 👉 https://lnkd.in/ePv35k4n #DontGoToTheShow Swim free, Keto. 📷 Diva Flora Nikolova | Inherently wild

Did you know the ocean is one of our planet's lungs? It produces more oxygen and absorbs more carbon than all of Earth's forests combined, and whales play their role in this life-sustaining process. They fertilize #phytoplankton with their waste, transport vital nutrients during their epic migrations, and even after they die, their carcasses nurture up to 200 species while locking away carbon. Now is the time to re-whale the ocean! We desperately need to restore the ocean and allow it to thrive. We've been on the frontline at #COP29 with partners from incredible organisations reminding policymakers that action for the ocean and for #wildlife is #climate action. We've talked to hundreds of delegates about what they need to do to protect whales and create an ocean resilient to change. #SaveTheWhaleSaveTheWorld

Our oceans are under threat from plastic pollution, particularly from abandoned fishing gear. Our recent study of UK harbours shows significant gaps in waste management practices. It's clear: we need coordinated efforts and robust infrastructure to tackle this issue. From free disposal to fisher education and improved recycling, there's much to be done. Let's work together to safeguard our marine ecosystems and promote sustainable fishing. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/e6SswP-d #OceanConservation #MarinePollution #SustainablePractices

🌊Protected areas in the North Sea were introduced to restore nature. So why allow seabed drilling for offshore CO2 storage that will likely pose risks to harbour porpoises and other whales and dolphins? We need to stop this kind of backwards step. Read the full story here👉https://ow.ly/1Xu150U7Y2K

As a proud member of the World Federation for Animals (WFA), Whale and Dolphin Conservation is excited to introduce the innovative 'Animals for Climate tool' at COP29 Azerbaijan today.🙌 Developed with the support of over 75 animal welfare organisations worldwide, this groundbreaking online resource aims to address the critical threats facing #wildlife populations and provide policymakers with the guidance needed to integrate #animalwelfare into #climate and #biodiversity strategies.🌎🌱 With #COP29 marking the final conference before the February 2025 deadline for countries to update their #climateaction plans (#NDCs), this tool offers actionable solutions for transforming food systems, protecting biodiversity, and enabling #ecosystems to store #carbon more effectively — ultimately helping wild animals thrive. 🐋🐬🐘🐒🐠🐅🦁🐧🦅🐼🐍🦎🐞🦋 “Whales and other wild animals have long been viewed as the victims of the climate crisis – marooned and doomed on a burning island as the seas rise around them through no fault of their own. Science is telling us though that they play important, outsized and functional roles in ecosystems that keep them resilient to change. They are our essential allies in the greatest challenge we have all collectively faced. We look forward to working with countries to help embed action to protect, conserve and restore animal populations in their climate and biodiversity strategies,” said Ed Goodall, Head of Intergovernmental Engagement, who is currently representing WDC at COP29. Today we're teaming up with @BankofCreativity, @OneMinuteBriefs and their creative community to create an image that celebrates whales as icons of the environmental movement and powerful symbols of our need to restore the ocean. Our planet needs a healthy ocean, and a healthy ocean needs whales. There’s just one rule: they have one minute to create one ad. We cannot wait to see what they come up with!
