  • A lucky little lapwing 💚 When a member of the public heard faint cries coming from a drain near a canal, they quickly called WIRES for help. Our Emergency Responder Kyana met the caller on-site, who guided her to the drain. Kyana quickly recognised the unmistakable calls were of a distressed lapwing chick. Unable to lift the heavy cover herself, she contacted Fire and Rescue who arrived within 10 minutes. Using specialised tools, they carefully removed the cover, revealing the small, cold, and weak chick trapped inside. Without any adult birds nearby, it was clear the young bird had been on its own for a while. Once rescued, the chick was gently warmed, given oral fluids and quickly showed signs of improvement. It was then transported to a veterinary clinic for further care and monitoring. Our work is only possible with the help of compassionate people like you. Together, we can continue to rescue and care for Australia’s wildlife. Your gift can make a difference for native animals in urgent need like this. 💚 Learn more or donate today to support our vital work ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/g2BBswdJ

  • When a baby koala was discovered alone on the ground, concerned locals called WIRES for help. WIRES Emergency Responder Amy arrived on-site and began searching the area, suspecting the joey had fallen from a tree. The tiny koala was distressed but unharmed and began calling out for its mother, but sadly, there was no sign of her nearby. The joey was safely taken to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital for assessment and in the meantime, Amy learned that the mother was part of a koala tracking program and using their tracking data, she was successfully located. The reunion was a heartwarming moment, with mother and joey quickly recognising each other and curling up together. Our work is only possible with the help of compassionate people like you. Together, we can continue to rescue and care for Australia’s wildlife. Your gift can make a difference for native animals in urgent need like this. It helps WIRES keep our Wildlife Rescue Office open 24/7 to answer over 600 daily rescue calls during spring and summer. • Meet a rare and captivating Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo, one of the many species that benefit from WIRES’ Food for Wildlife Program. Through this program, we’re able to support the feeding and care of sick, injured, and orphaned native animals across Australia, ensuring their survival and well-being. This holiday season, you can play a part in this vital work. From November 6th to December 27th, Woolworths will be selling their popular Reindeer Carrots, with 10 cents from every pack donated to WIRES. These funds help us provide essential resources to over 3,900 registered wildlife carers and groups, enabling them to respond swiftly to wildlife in need, especially during times of disaster. Last year alone, we supported 38 wildlife groups across Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland through challenges like bushfires, cyclones, floods, oil spills, and heat stress events. So, as you shop at Woolworths Supermarkets this season, look for the WIRES logo on Reindeer Carrots and other festive treats. Your purchase helps ensure that Australian wildlife continues to thrive. 🥕💚 Picture by Karen from Tree Roo Rescue and Conservation Centre QLD

  • Flying fox pup rescued after heartbreaking loss 💚 When a member of the public noticed a flying fox hanging from power lines and thought they saw movement, they called WIRES for help. WIRES Emergency Responder Kyana arrived and using her binoculars, quickly assessed the situation. Tragically, she could see that the adult flying fox was deceased—but spotted a tiny, 10-day-old pup alive and clinging to her mother. With the help of a cherry picker, the mother and pup were safely retrieved and carefully placed in a towel-lined box. Kyana gently removed the little pup and placed it in a bat wrap for warmth and safety. Following a thorough examination, the 86-gram female pup was transferred to WIRES volunteer Storm for ongoing care. Now in expert hands, the pup is thriving. 💚 Our work is only possible with the help of compassionate people like you. Together, we can continue to rescue and care for Australia’s wildlife. • Caitlin the Koala Survives Appin Road Car Strike 🐨 After being hit by a car on the notoriously deadly Appin Road, WIRES carers were thrilled to find that Caitlin the koala was not badly injured! After some time in care and a vet visit, WIRES carer Emma released Caitlin back into the wild. Caitlin’s story highlights an escalating crisis for Appin’s koalas and the desperate need for safe koala overpasses and vital koala corridors. WIRES is responding to an alarming number of koala reports, with volunteers attending nine koala vehicle strikes in just eight days in the Appin area. Forced to cross Appin Road in search of habitat due to unprecedented clearing of local bushland, fatalities have reached a crisis point. Appin’s koalas urgently need protected habitats, green corridors, and safe wildlife crossings to ensure this special koala community survives and thrives. • Brushtail possum unexpected hold-up rescue 💚 WIRES’ Possum Co-ordinator recently received a call about a brushtail possum in a tricky situation. A member of the public reported the possum trapped in a hollow tree on their property. On closer inspection, it was clear that the possum’s head and shoulders were visible, but its hips were firmly stuck in the hollow—likely the result of attempting to exit through a smaller side hole instead of the top. The tree was too high for immediate rescue, and when a tree lopper wasn’t available, our rescuer called in the local SES (State Emergency Service). They quickly arrived with a truck, two vehicles, ladders, and safety equipment, ready to assist. After assessing the situation, the SES team climbed the tree and attempted to gently free the possum. However, it was well and truly wedged. With one member holding the possum securely, another carefully widened the hollow’s entrance while ensuring the possum remained safe. Once freed, the possum was taken to the vet for a check-up and spent the night in care. Happily, he showed no injuries and was released back into his original territory the next day. The homeowners have since requested help installing possum boxes to provide safe and suitable shelter options for local wildlife—a wonderful outcome that will help protect more native animals in the future. Learn more about how to build possum boxes at ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gBTSSUSv Our work is only possible with the help of compassionate people like you.
