SPIRITUALLY-ORIENTED COUNSELLING: RELEVANT BUT UNDERVALUED
Integrating spirituality into therapy requires careful considerations and experience due to associated complexities. Navigating interrelationships and balance between personal spirituality, professional competency, and ethical considerations is not for "careless" practitioners. However, there are growing awareness of the value of spiritually-oriented counselling despite these intricacies (Woodhouse and Hogan, 2020; Captari et al, 2018, Worthington et al, 2011).
Spiritually-oriented counselling should not be aimed at reducing spiritual experience to psychological categories. Rather, it can be used to appreciate and facilitate the role that spirituality may play in a person’s life and wellbeing.
Clients' preferences drive the use of spiritually-oriented counselling. We work therapeutically with clients' beliefs, and only guide further exploration if beneficial to clients.

Why are some losses so often difficult to talk about? Especially for men!
This episode of our Movember 2024 series was significant for me: I didn’t anticipate that talking about my divorce experience this openly would be as challenging. Yet, such actions are often part of the recovery process for self and others. This is an excerpt, focusing on all 3 champions sharing their experiences regarding loss of relationships. Follow this link to view the entire video, if interested: https://lnkd.in/gagFwJiV .
I celebrate Gomezga Simfukwe "Gome" and Victor Adeseolu "Mc Vicolo" for their purposefulness and courage in joining me to facilitate these episodes of Conversation with Multicultural Men (CMM) over the last few years. Our program is not a pity party. Neither is it a platform for blame games. We share respectfully to keep hope alive. We remind ourselves that we're not alone, helping others know they’re not alone as well. We model the benefits of seeking help, and doing it rightly.
Arguably, there are other more serious life-events than loss of relationships. However, the principles remain the same: one is not alone. There's help. Being vulnerable to seek and use help is not weakness, but strength. As men, we can lead. There's so much at stake beyond us: our wellbeing, our families, our legacies. Personally, I now appreciate even much more the advantages of being in supportive communities like my family, community groups, work teams, sports clubs, friendship groups, church, etc. Significant life events should not drive one away from such systems of advantages. Rather, that’s when we need them more.
Loss of relationships often go deep. Talking about it also go deep, by necessity. This CMM episode was designed as a 2-part series. We ended up discarding the PART 2, all 3 men agreed that one episode was enough, it was a bit "heavy". We were also aligned that it was about the most significant for us.
Self-care check for me: I am recovering well and ready for a future of my destiny. I keep taking advantage of various helps: my faith, family, friends, church, counselling sessions (including EAPs, where available), etc. For anyone amid a decision regarding loss of relationship, divorce, etc.: Please keep hope alive. Do things right and rightly. Safety, first! Safety, for self, and all parties involved. Seek and use help, and do it early, do it consistently, and continue with help as long as necessary (recovery is a process).
To hope, help, and health, for men, and entire family unit.
