Challenging inequity, embracing diversity
About us
Women's Health Goulburn North East is the non-government regional women’s health promotion agency for Goulburn and Ovens Murray area of Eastern Division (Department of Health and Human Services). We are dedicated to promoting the health outcomes of all women and girls. We work with stakeholders to build the capacity of services and communities in the region to address issues affecting women. We acknowledge and affirm the diversity, capability, and resilience of women, and work to build on these strengths to achieve safer, fairer and more equitable social, environmental and economic outcomes for women. We recognise the harms of gender inequity and work to create a community that is equally beneficial for women, men, boys and girls.

WHGNE attended the Steps Towards Change walk against gender-based violence in Wallan yesterday. We were delighted to engage with many of the 105 community members and representatives of organisations attending, like Camp Kiah - whose representatives are pictured top left with WHGNE staff. During the event we also had the opportunity to listen to the Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, Vicki Ward and Tarang Chawla - a powerful advocate working to end men's violence against women. Tarang spoke to the actions we can all take to help prevent this violence before it starts - a message close to our own hearts. We'd like to extend a big thank you to Mitchell Shire Council for organising this amazing event and everyone who came along. What is size inclusive practice? For those of us working in health promotion, health and community services, education or the media it’s important to consider how we communicate about health and wellbeing. When we talk about bodies and health we can make a difference by focusing on health at any size. One of the recommendations to come out of our Long Story Short project, which aimed to reshape the narrative of women’s sexual and reproductive health, is all around creating supportive environments. Part of this work is to enable women and their communities to access the health and support services they need, free from stigma and discrimination. Research from Better Health Network tells us that there is not always a connection between weight and health and that an individual’s behaviour is only one of many factors that can influence weight. International day of persons with disability falls during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This year, the UN’s theme asks us to amplify the leadership of people with disabilities. The Changing the Landscape framework from Our Watch and Women with Disabilities Victoria guides us in empowering women and girls with disability, by promoting 'women and girls with disabilities’ independence, agency and participation in leadership and decision-making’ - we can do this in our work, through advocacy and in community settings. You can find links to Changing the Landscape and other resources, as well as read more about turning awareness in action this 16 Days and beyond by clicking the link below. https://lnkd.in/gtVuWVNc

November is Trans Month, a time to celebrate the resilience, wellbeing and wholeness of the transgender community. WHGNE’s work towards achieving gender justice and optimal health and wellbeing for women across our region is inclusive of transgender, non-binary and gender fluid people. Applying an inclusive gender lens in professional settings can include simple practices like sharing pronouns and publicly supporting transgender rights, alongside practical considerations like ensuring gender inclusive facilities are available. To find out more about being a trans ally across a range of settings, you can follow the link to the Trans Hub below: https://lnkd.in/gHrBH4q
