About us
Women in STEMM Australia began in 2014 and has grown into a nationally and internationally recognised association for women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM). Our core purpose is to advocate for gender equity and equality in Australia’s STEMM sectors, and support initiatives that drive change in the workplace and learning space, engage on gender equity in STEMM, whilst upholding core values such as respect and scientific excellence. Our role is to ensure women in STEMM with the capacity and capability to contribute to the innovation agenda are equally included, recognized and rewarded for their experience and expertise. Our philosophy is “Pay It Forward” and we uphold the core values of scientific excellence and respect for all. Our activities welcome and aim to benefit all women in STEMM regardless of their discipline and profession. Women in STEMM Australia has created a diverse, inclusive network of STEMM professionals at all levels of academia, industry, education, business and government. Tomorrow, February 11th, marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science—a day dedicated to recognising the critical role women and girls play in science and technology. It also marks the one-year anniversary of the release of my book, The Engaging Science Classroom. Reflecting on this dual significance, it's an opportune moment to discuss the current landscape for women in STEM and explore ways to inspire more girls to pursue careers in these fields. The Current Landscape Despite progress, women remain underrepresented in STEM professions. Globally, women constitute only 29.2% of the STEM workforce across 146 nations, compared to nearly 50% in non-STEM occupations (swe.org). In Australia, recent data indicates that women make up 26% of the STEM workforce, a gradual increase over the past few years (stemwomen.com). Strategies to Encourage Girls in STEM To bridge this gap, we can implement several strategies to motivate and support girls in pursuing STEM careers: 👩⚕️ Early Exposure and Education: Introducing STEM concepts through hands-on activities, after-school clubs, and career day events starting in elementary school can spark interest and build confidence. 👩⚕️ Visible Role Models and Mentorship: Connecting girls with female STEM professionals provides relatable role models and demystifies these careers. Programs like Curious Minds, STEM Sisters, Robogals and STEM Changemakers (Sarah Chapman FRACI) offer mentorship opportunities that empower young women. 👩⚕️ Community Partnerships: Collaborating with local schools, organisations, and businesses to provide resources, workshops, and real-world STEM experiences can enhance learning and inspiration. A Personal Milestone When I chose to release The Engaging Science Classroom on this date last year, it was with the intention of contributing to this movement. The book aims to provide educators with practical strategies to make science accessible and exciting for all students, with the hope of inspiring more girls to see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and innovators. Looking Ahead As we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and reflect on the past year, let's renew our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where every student, regardless of gender, feels empowered to explore and excel in STEM. What strategies have you found effective in encouraging girls to pursue STEM? Let's share our experiences and continue to support the next generation of women in science.

More Australian women and girls are participating in science, according to our STEM Equity Monitor. But there’s more to do. In 2022, women made up 66% of VET enrolments in natural and physical sciences. University STEM enrolments from women also grew by 28% between 2015 and 2022. But only 25% of Year 12 enrolments in IT, physics, and engineering subjects were girls. And girls are half as likely as boys to aspire to a STEM career. On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let’s commit to inspiring and supporting their journeys into and through STEM. Tune in to mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science - our Board Director Dr Morley Muse is on this panel on tertiary studies in STEM and the rewarding careers.
It's one thing to present the next generation with a litany of future woes, but quite another to supply them with the tools to overcome them! At midday on Friday, 21 February, tune in to the livestream from the Parliament of Victoria's Legislative Assembly and join dozens of young women from secondary schools across the State of Victoria in discussion with three remarkable, early career women pursuing STEM professions. Our topic: 'The Solutions of the Future,' and how tertiary studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics enables rewarding careers that can take us out of the passenger seat and into action mode! Featuring Kimberley Reid, Ruwini Cooray and Dr Morley Muse in discussion with our MC, Natasha Mitchell. Convened by the Parliament of Victoria for the Inspiring Victoria program, in partnership with the Royal Society of Victoria and the Department of Education, to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, thanks to the kind support of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, The Hon Maree Edwards MP. #womeninscience #womeninSTEM #idwgs #careers #stemcareers #solutionsfocus
