“Having a specialist, independent lawyer can mean the difference between feeling crushed by the process or coming out the other side with a sense of justice and closure.” Lara Freidin, the head of our peak body Women's Legal Services Australia, has today written an urgent article on why women who report sexual violence need to have their own lawyers, instead of relying on public prosecutions who don’t represent them. While responding to police and the legal system, victim-survivors of sexual violence often face invasive questioning, re-traumatisation, and can feel like mere witnesses in their own cases – not someone with legal rights. Specialist independent lawyers can help victim-survivors by: 🔵 Advocating for clients and making sure they know their rights 🔵 Offering trauma-informed advice 🔵 Protecting private records like health records 🔵 Drafting impact statements 🔵 Making applications for financial help 🔵 Support to get through complex legal systems 🔵 Support in court and criminal proceedings Along with Women’s Legal Services in WA and the ACT, we’re part of a new program to support women and non-binary people with trauma-informed, sexual assault legal assistance. But we need funding to ensure we can support our clients through the entire legal process. Read the full article by Lara here: https://lnkd.in/gifFBnkW
