Should GIS be a tool democratised for all, or exclusively managed by professionals? That was the theme of the great debate at GeoRabble Brisbane this week. Woolpert’s very own Christopher Blackstock went head-to-head with fellow geospatial experts to find out. Both teams raised engaging and thought-provoking arguments, with GIS professionals compared to sheepherders and brain surgeons. It was great to connect with the Brisbane geospatial community and hear the knowledge and enthusiasm in the room for our craft! Woolpert is pleased to have been selected to map the coastline of Aotearoa New Zealand’s North Island as part of the Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) 3D Coastal Mapping program. Over the next three years, the program will set out to map up to 40% of New Zealand’s coast utilizing bathymetric lidar, with the data assisting communities to mitigate impacts of climate change. “It’s been great to see the commencement of this program. The Woolpert team is underway with depths of up to 25m being recorded from our Leica Hawkeye-5 Bathymetric lidar sensor,” Woolpert Sales Manager and certified professional hydrographic surveyor Daniel Kruimel said. “There are going to be some truly amazing lidar datasets in New Zealand from this program, and the previous Provincial Growth Fund, where Woolpert was also one of the selected companies capturing topographic lidar data covering most of New Zealand.” In 2024, Woolpert collected over 6,000km² of topographic lidar data over Auckland. “Among other applications, lidar data has been used to monitor erosion of cliffs along the coast,” Kruimel said. “Combining this with bathymetric lidar data will unlock new insights for researchers and planners.” #lidar #geospatial #mapping #aotearoa #newzealand
Is it a bird?! Is it a plane?! Yes – it is a plane! The LINZ 3D Coastal Mapping programme is getting underway this week and you may spot our mapping planes in your area 🛩️ LINZ’s exciting, multi-year programme of work to map up to 40% of our coastline in 3D and install 10 global positioning receivers at tide gauges around the coast will help the country mitigate the future impacts of climate change 🌡️ Scientists, modellers and planners will use the high-definition LiDAR data to understand how our country could be impacted by sea-level rise, future tsunami, and storm surges from weather events 🌊 Once the information is captured and mapped it will provide a valuable baseline for future studies of how our coastline is changing over time. We are prioritising parts of the coastline that are the most populated, or where key infrastructure is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Our suppliers, NV5 Geospatial and Woolpert Asia-Pacific, will begin mapping the following areas this summer: Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Wellington, Manawatu-Whanganui, Taranaki, Southland, Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru and Westland are up first! We will keep you posted when we know more about their plans. Planes need to fly at 500m above ground to capture great data, and they use pulsed light LiDAR technology to build up a 3D picture of the coast. You may hear or notice these planes in your area. Data from this programme will be freely and publicly available on the LINZ Data Service once it is processed 🖥️ Read more about this work on our website - https://lnkd.in/gP_aPAuu

Each year our Singapore #Woolpack celebrates the Lunar New Year, bringing forward luck and prosperity for the year ahead. The team gathered to enjoy the festivities, with the tossing of the Yu Sheng and gifting of mandarin oranges to symbolise greater wealth and luck. With our Asia-Pacific teams mobilised in Singapore for a major aerial survey project, this year’s celebrations welcomed Melbourne-based colleagues, experiencing the tradition for the very first time. Woolpert wishes our clients and colleagues a joyful and prosperous Lunar New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai
