About us

ygap is an international organisation that creates positive change by making entrepreneurship more inclusive. We believe that business can be a force for good, and that entrepreneurship is key to solving the most challenging social and environmental problems facing our world today. But for this to happen, the world’s diversity must be represented in creating these solutions and the systems that enable them to succeed. ygap exists to increase the capacity and agency of entrepreneurs to run successful businesses, and reduce the barriers that inhibit access and inclusion within the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Since 2008, we have run 57 programs that have supported 589 ventures working to make change in their communities. We have offices led by local teams in Africa, South Asia, the Pacific Islands and Australia.

Now those are some inspirational women! Huge thanks to our partners at the Judith Neilson Foundation for their ongoing support 💚 👏

Meet Muofhe, Caren, and Nomfanelo—three entrepreneurs scaling their agribusinesses in Kenya and South Africa through ygap’s entrepreneur accelerator program. 🌿 Muofhe Ratshikombo founded Oumie's Grandè, turning a passion for traditional atchaar into a thriving agribusiness that supports organic farmers in Limpopo, South Africa. By sourcing locally, she reduces food waste, strengthens biodiversity, and creates rural jobs that help stabilise the local economy. 🐓 Caren Jopita runs Jopish Integrated Farm in Kenya, combining poultry farming with black soldier fly larvae production. Her farm turns food waste into high-protein animal feed and organic fertiliser, boosting farm yields, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating jobs through innovative waste management. 🚜 Nomfanelo Khanyile launched Esisipho K, growing her agribusiness from a 15-hectare farm to a supply chain powerhouse serving major retailers in South Africa. Her venture is also boosting rural economic development, employing locals and expanding into new markets. Explore how ygap and other innovative partnerships are creating economic opportunities across Africa in our 2024 Impact Report: https://lnkd.in/gzqqaaCt

It was an incredible experience attending the PLP Class of 2024 graduation and meeting some of the brilliant new innovators from the Power Learn Project Community in person! I had the privilege of engaging with some of these graduates during the Power Learn Project Idea Stage Support Bootcamp, facilitated by ygap Kenya which ran from October to November. This graduation was a powerful reminder of the transformative impact PLP is creating through collaboration with other key ecosystem partners. Special shoutout to: • Ephy Yunan , founder of Kilele Bracelets • Wilson Kinda, founder of LandleaseX Hub • Alfred Balazire Lurhakongola Founder and his teammate Felix Ayot of Nguvu Teach -all the way from Kakuma 👏 It was a pleasure conversing with you all and witnessing the passion behind your ventures. Wishing you all the best as you launch your MVPs! Let’s continue driving change through #Collaboration4Impact. Congratulations to the #PLPClassof2024! ygap Safaricom PLC

Update from one of our inspiring entrepreneurs, Nonhlanhla Joye (aka Ma Joye)! Great work 👏

🌟 **Celebrating Resilience and Growth!** 🌟 Remember The girl with a pump on her head? I am incredibly proud to share the inspiring journey of Sthandiwe Buthelezi, a remarkable participant in the Umgibe Farming Organics Women in Farming (WIF) program, supported by the Momentum Group Limited . Umgibe serves as an implementing partner, empowering women like Sthandiwe to thrive in agriculture. Sthandiwe, who carried a pump on her head, is now successfully supplying spinach to Aheers in Greytown twice a week. Her journey proves that it's always impossible until it is done. Halala, Sthandiwe Buthelezi! Halala! 🎉 To meet the increasing market demand, a full irrigation system and a bigger solar pump and a pump house is needed for Sthandiwe, to enable her to grow at least 120,000 seedlings—up from the current 20,000. The success of Umgibe programs illustrates that when we address the specific needs of each participant through holistic baseline assessments, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, we can achieve our goals effectively. This model not only benefits the participants but also aligns with the objectives of our funders. There are 105 participants like Sthandiwe in our programs that require support in scaling their projects the market is there.Nonkosi Creatives Nkosinathi Mahlangu Nyasha Frank Chibanda Donald Pillai - Accelerating Africa🟢Communities, Companies, Brand Dr Kathy Hurly Mzwandile Nhleko Mabhoko Mahlangu Dr. Siphesihle Qange, PhD Dave Harris Julia West ygap Khethiwe Nkuna Sinovuyo Moabalobelo #WomenInFarming #UmgibeFarming #MomentumGroupFoundation #Empowerment #SustainableAgriculture #CommunitySupport Friends of UKZN Agriculture Tshego Bokaba

Earlier this year we launched our new yCapital initiative, to provide 0% interest loans to promising women-led ventures in Africa. We are excited to announce that our first loans have now been disbursed to three inspiring, innovative women in Kenya - Grace Waringa, Diana Muthee-Gitiba, and Joanie Kinyanjui. This video gives you a glimpse into their work and the change they are making in their communities through their businesses. We are grateful for our partnership with the Judith Neilson Foundation and the Grow Corp Foundation, two of ygap’s committed partners, for their support in making yCapital a reality. Thank you! https://lnkd.in/g57hZNtm

During the last couple of weeks in South Africa, I met two dozen incredible impact entrepreneurs who have been backed by ygap, like Humbulani Owen Mulaudzi. While his organic farming venture has seen gherkins shelved in Aussie supermarkets, Humbulani has been donating 10-15% of his weekly produce to the local soup kitchen and under-resourced daycare centres for the better part of a decade. With a nudge from ygap's 2019 accelerator, Humbulani began diversifying his crops to meet local demand - as pictured, I have never been more fascinated by intercropping, cover crops and cabbage seeds! More on Humbulani's story to come, featuring organic jalapeños and expansion goals. #socialentrepreneurship #leanstartups #africa

I’ve been super inspired by Meenal Khare’s leadership approach to be super intentional about engaging deeply with the entrepreneurs that ygap works with. Today we were out in Diepsloot, Joburg together with the ygap Kenya and South Africa teams to see Diep Organics run by Humbulani Owen Mulaudzi.
