Today, I’m at the OCTEC Limited Australia Orange head office, reviewing this year’s applications for the Glenn Taylor Scholarship. As Chair of the Board of OCTEC, it’s an honour to be part of this process, which supports young people in Western NSW to achieve their educational and career aspirations. The Glenn Taylor Scholarship was established in 2023 to honour the legacy of Glenn Taylor, a dedicated community leader, long-serving Orange City Council Councillor, and valued OCTEC board member. Glenn’s passion for community development was evident in his 26 years of service on the council, including seven terms as deputy mayor. He was a driving force behind initiatives such as advocating for a 24-hour rescue helicopter service and lobbying for the North Orange Bypass. Since the inception of the scholarship, 30 deserving candidates have been awarded funding to support their studies. The program provides up to $20,000 per annum for students from Western NSW pursuing further education at TAFE, university, or through apprenticeships and traineeships. It is open to residents of Barwon, Bathurst, Cabonne, Cootamundra, Dubbo, Murray, Orange, and Parkes state zones who are experiencing socio-economic hardship or living with a disability. Reading through this year’s applications, I’m inspired by the resilience and determination of these students. I want to sincerely thank my fellow OCTEC board members and CEO Andrew McDougall OAM for their unwavering support of this program. Their dedication ensures that Glenn’s legacy of empowering individuals through education continues to make a meaningful impact in our community. Glenn was a dear friend, and I am proud to see his name live on through this scholarship, helping to change lives—just as he always did. #OCTEC, #GlennTaylorScholarship
