Role Summary
The Executive Manager, Insurance (Appointed Actuary & Capital services) is responsible to the Executive, Insurance, for delivering high quality actuarial analysis and advice which creates value for Quantium’s insurance clients. Developing and shaping Quantium’s Appointed Actuary, Valuation and Capital Advice market offering, the Executive Manager has a commercial and strategic mindset, understanding client problems, needs and opportunities. This role also requires designing solutions, overseeing project delivery and effective communication with senior client stakeholders.
The Executive Manager leads some business development, as well as being responsible for people management and some practice management. The Executive Manager will not be expected to assume any Appointed Actuary roles for Quantium’s clients upon joining. However, the opportunity exists to take on one or more of these positions in future.

How will you make an impact?
- Lead teams of consultants to design and deliver high-quality and timely actuarial and analytical solutions across multiple projects, with a focus on Appointed Actuary and capital advice. Using expert knowledge and commercial acumen, translate insights into meaningful action with a positive client impact
- As a result, ensure high client satisfaction and project success rates (measured by NPS)
- Oversee project management by Lead Consultants or Senior Consultants, for effective staff utilisation and project recovery
- Manage senior stakeholder relationships within the Executive Manager’s client portfolio
- Manage revenue of approximately $2 million per annum from Appointed Actuary and capital advisory work; win new work, with a business development target of not more than $1 million per annum. Develop and maintain a strong pipeline of opportunities from existing and target clients, from anticipating client issues and understanding client needs through active listening
- Successfully scope, price and negotiate contracts for client projects
- Support the practice’s industry expertise by identifying regulatory changes, emerging themes, problems and opportunities, leveraging your deep industry knowledge and technical expertise as well as existing and emerging Quantium IP. The role will include exploring new and better ways to deliver existing projects
- Provide leadership that drives improvements in our Appointed Actuary processes, enhancing the insights and value delivered to Quantium’s clients
- Deliver presentations and thought leadership pieces that position Quantium Insurance as a leading adviser on Appointed Actuary and capital assignments
- Lead the growth and development of the Quantium Appointed Actuary and capital team, including recruitment, training and retention initiatives (measured by engagement and pulse scores)
- Manage Insurance practice responsibilities, including business development, client planning and some areas of practice management. This includes attending regular meetings in these areas
- People management, including setting objectives and KPIs, performance reviews, feedback, career mentoring and supporting development for direct reports
- Connect with and leverage subject matter experts across Quantium as required, to develop the best solution for each client
- Self-improve, through continuous development, self-learning and building new knowledge.
- 12+ years’ experience as a general insurance actuary, with 5+ years of senior stakeholder management experience at C-suite executive level. Deep understanding of industry trends, challenges and opportunities.
- Experience at Director level or equivalent in a general insurance actuarial consulting practice is preferred but not essential, including demonstrable experience in identifying, targeting and winning new work from existing and / or new insurance clients, as well as managing deep client relationships
- A track record of managing client relationships and delivering against commercial objectives. Experience in delivering against revenue and recoverability targets is also preferred
- Experience in coaching and developing high performing technical, commercial and delivery skills in junior and mid-level team actuarial consulting staff
- Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (FIAA) qualified, or equivalent from another actuarial body
- Minimum of 8 years of actuarial valuation / reserving experience, 10+ years preferred
- Experience in designing and managing Australian or New Zealand Appointed Actuary teams in the past (either as a consultant or internal company actuary). This includes preparing Actuarial Valuation Reports (AVRs) and Financial Condition Reports (FCRs). Similar experience in other countries or for similar clients will be considered (e.g. accident compensation schemes). Experience with IFRS 17 reporting is preferred
- Commercial acumen and sharp problem-solving skills, to understand business needs and be able to suggest the commercial impact of different solutions or approaches
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with C-level executives and Boards, communicating complex actuarial or analytical insights to non-technical users
- Collaborative and engaging style with an ability to understand what matters to stakeholders. Demonstrates active listening skills
- Experience in project management and leadership, including effective delegation
- Prior experience in capital modelling (Dynamic Financial Analysis or DFA) and interpreting and analysing catastrophe model output is preferred but not essential
- Prior experience using WTW insurance software is preferred but not essential, in particular Igloo (for capital modelling) and ResQ (for reserving).
