This is a Fixed Term Position until 30 June 2026
The Policy Officer will work as part of a high performing team to deliver key government priorities to reform the building system and deliver safe and quality buildings for Victorians with a focus on matters relating to emergency recovery. Working in a dynamic environment, the role will contribute to several policy projects designed to improve building outcomes for the industry, practitioners and consumers, with a focus on policy reforms to enhance resilience and protect communities and the built environment.
This includes supporting the development of policy options, assisting with drafting of regulatory changes, preparing briefings and correspondence for Ministers and executives, and working across a wide range of government, industry and consumer stakeholders to achieve effective building policy and regulatory outcomes.

Position Outcomes / Accountabilities
- Contribute to the development, review and evaluation of complex and innovative regulatory options (including projects), supported by advice, which is factual, accurate and suitable for its audience, that deliver the government’s priorities, including relating to emergency recovery and community resilience.
- Maintain an awareness of international and national building issues and best practice, including on matters relating to how building regulatory frameworks can respond to emergency events in an efficient and effective way.
- Develop relevant innovative policy options that are supported by advice, which is factual, accurate and suitable for its audience, and deliver relevant government priorities.
- Ensure policy and regulatory advice is delivered in a timely manner and is effective in achieving the required outcome.
Stakeholder Engagement - Monitors client and stakeholder satisfaction and constructively deals with stakeholder issues.
Policy Design and Development - Interprets & applies policies relevant to own work, drafts policies and business cases using research skills and in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving - Resolves issues through deep understanding or interpretation of existing guidelines.
Communicate with Impact - Prepares and delivers logical sequential and succinct presentations.
Qualifications And Experience
- A tertiary qualification in law, public policy, building and-or community resilience, economics or a related discipline is highly desirable.
- Experience in the development of policy, legislation and/or regulations, particularly in a planning or a building related field.
