Sea Forest has always been proudly Tasmanian, so it's a delight to see our CEO, Sam Elsom, named the Tasmanian Australian of the Year for 2025. It's a well-earned reward, recognising Sam's personal sacrifice to raise awareness of climate change, and the dedication of the team around him.
Speaking via video from South Africa, Sam said: "This is extremely humbling... What we're doing on the East Coast of Tasmania has global implications... Through collaboration we're demonstrating that we're having not only just local impact but a global impact on methane emissions."

“People tend to forget that play is serious,” painter David Hockney once said, and we couldn’t agree more. At 1 Hotels, people often ask why we host Happenings. You might imagine these events are just opportunities to sip wine and pontificate about its characteristics (sometimes, sure), but the truth is, our Happenings are serious fun. We’re on a mission to lead a sustainable movement in hospitality—not just to be a sustainable hotel. If we invited you to a 90-minute lecture on sustainability, some of you might jump at the chance, but many wouldn’t. Now, what if instead we invited you to learn how to create a gourmet dinner party menu using foraged foliage and fresh, local, organic produce? Or to try your hand at screen printing with natural dyes, or join a walking tour of Melbourne’s hidden organic herb gardens? Suddenly, it’s more engaging. As psychologist Jean Piaget said, "Play is fundamental to cognitive development," and that’s why we run Happenings. By immersing our guests in playful, hands-on activities that benefit both them and the planet, we hope to spark a deeper interest in sustainability—while you meet fascinating people and learn new skills along the way.
